8th Grade Math at SCS - Historical perspective • Selected students were gathered in the cafeteria to participate in Algebra for placement credit. • More students did the same thing • Anyone who wanted to give it a try signed a contract to complete all work and participate. • All students attended for either enrichment or placement credit – still a choice. • All students “do 8th grade math” and those that make the grade will get placement credit at CVU.
Algebra at SCS • Our K-5 math program begins to develop algebraic ideas in Kindergarten and they are further developed each year. • Bridges, CMP3 and the Common Core demands we promote algebraic thinking all the time!
8th Grade Math at SCS: • All students have the opportunity to take higher level math courses in high school • 8th Grade Math Includes All Algebra 1 Content • Collaborative planning to ensure student engagement
What does 8th Grade math look like at SCS? • Math is taught every day • Math takes place in the classroom – DI to ensure engagement and equity • Students access additional support on teams, when needed – these additional times will be responsive. • Algebra is taught by all 8th grade math teachers and is collaborative – monthly planning
Assessments in 8th Grade • Students will be assessed on the same content but we have different expectations… • SCS midterm • CSSU final • 80% average on highest level of assessments means a recommendation to Geometry • SBAC – spring 2015
True or False Quiz • 8th Grade Math is exclusive and students are hand-picked to take Algebra for placement credit. • Students are expected to teach themselves algebra and there is no direct instruction or time for follow up with teachers. • Every student will get credit for Algebra and be placed into Geometry in high school. • 8th Grade is when algebra is taught at SCS.
