  2. Church and Eucharist • What do you think of when you hear the word “church?” • Read pages 135-139 • Describe the many different uses of the word “church.” • Explain how church & Eucharist are interrelated.

  3. Eucharist • Makes present the death and resurrection of Jesus. • We participate in this mystery as we enter the Sacrament. • Sign of the unity of the Church • Source of the unity of the Church as we become conformed to Christ. • “Source and Summit of the Christian Life”

Church • Jewish tradition of gathering together to worship God continued • House churches – small dynamic communities of love & service • Church = assembly; divinely called gathering. • Three levels of Church • Entire people of God (universal) • Local Church (diocese) • Celebration of liturgy (parish) • Church = Body of Christ • Church is deprived if one member is absent.

Church & the Eucharist • Church is the Body of Christ (St. Paul) • Eucharist is the Church gathering to give thanks & praise to God. • Eucharist makes us become more and more God’s people, temples of Holy Spirit, members of Body of Christ. • Eucharist strengthens the Church, and the Church is the true home of the Eucharist.

Lectionary • Schedule of readings throughout the year • Universal - Every Roman Catholic Church throughout the world follows the same schedule of readings. • No matter where you are on any given day, you will hear the same readings as people all over the world. • Cycle of readings • Weekend – Three year cycle – A, B, and C • Weekday – Two year cyle – 1 & 2.

Gifts at Mass • Bread, wine, and offering for poor are presented to priest in name of Church • Symbolically, we also offer ourselves to be transformed with the bread and wine. • “See what you are; become what you receive.” – Augustine • Summary of Mass & Christianity: • “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.” MEMORIZE!

  12. Liturgy of the Eucharist • Anamnesis – “Remembering” • What do we remember? • Intercessions – Prayers for Church • Who do we pray for? • Doxology and Amen – “words of praise” & our assent

Items used during Eucharist • Corporal – square cloth on which everything is placed • from Latin “corpus” meaning body • Purificator – folded in three layers, used to purify (clean) chalice & paten • Chalice – vessel for wine • Paten – round dish for host (bread) • Roman Missal (Sacramentary) - book of prayers & rituals

Ministries as Mass • Ministry – Service • Each person at Mass has a vital role in building the Body of Christ. • Bishop – sign of unity with whole Church. • Priest – makes present the offering of Jesus himself to the Father. • Deacon – primary assistance; roles. • Assembly – offer self & life to God. • Unity of Body of Christ.

Ministries for the Laity • Altar Server – Assist priest & deacon • Lector – proclaim Word of God • Extraordinary minister of Holy Communion – distribute Eucharist • Why Extraordinary? • Other ministries • Psalmist, choir director/choir, musicians, sacristan, commentator, greeters, ushers. • Many parts, one body of Christ.
