Accessing EOS CryosphericProducts at NSIDC Marilyn Kaminski MODIS Product Team Lead November 16, 2004
EOS Data at NSIDC • MODIS/Terra snow and sea ice products • MODIS/Aqua snow and sea ice products • AMSR-E standard products • ICESat/GLAS standard products • NISE near-real-time snow & sea ice extent product • EOS precursors (SSM/I, AVHRR, TOVS, …) http://www.nsidc.org/data/daac.html EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
NSIDC EOS Data Access A range of options for all user types: • *NSIDC Data Pool • *Search ‘n’ Order Web Interface (SNOWI) • *MODIS SNOWI • *EOS Data Gateway (EDG) • Subscription • Machine-to-Machine Gateway (MTMGW) Casual users Power users Other DAACs have additional access methods *Demonstrated today and tomorrow EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
Data Access for Casual Users (1) • NSIDC Data Pool • Contains most recently-ingested data (retention period varies; can be lengthened on user request) • Searchable hierarchically by instrument and product, or by direct access to ftp site • Directly-linked browse data for many products • Directly-linked access to HDF-to-GeoTIFF converter (HEG) for subsetting, stitching, and reprojection of many products • Can be scripted for automated access EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
Data Access for Casual Users (2) • SNOWI • Easy to use • Searchable by specific product, region, and time • Additional DAACs/instruments/products can be configured upon user request • No direct access to browse data, subsetters, or conversion tools • MODIS SNOWI • Same features as above • MODIS Level 3 gridded products searchable by tile number EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
Data Access for Experienced Users • EDG • One-stop shopping for all EOS data at all DAACs • Provides more capabilities than data pool or SNOWI • Cross-instrument search • Cross-DAAC search • Space/time coincident search • Displays coverage of selected files on globe • Directly-linked browse data for many products • Directly-linked access to HEW Subsetting Appliance (HSA) for spatial and parameter subsetting of many products • More complex to use; has a learning curve EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
Data Access: Automated • Subscriptions • Data is sent via ftp push/pull upon ingest • Data can be selected by geographic region or specific metadata values • Contact NSIDC User Services to arrange • Machine-to-Machine Gateway • Data is sent via ftp push/pull upon scripted request • Initially intended for use by science teams to support data access for processing; available to all users with demonstrated need • Contact NSIDC User Services to arrange (requires signed agreement) EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
Data Manipulation Tools • Many tools are available to support data manipulation and analysis (COTS, NSIDC-developed, externally-developed) • *Envi • *HDF-to-GeoTIFF Converter (HEG) • *HDF-EOS Web-based Subsetter (HEW) • *AMSR-E Swath-to-Grid Toolkit (AS2GT) • *MODIS Swath-to-Grid Toolkit (MS2GT) • MODIS Reprojection Tool (MRT) and MRT-swath • NSIDC GLAS Altimetry elevation extractor Tool (NGAT) • Readers • . . . • New tools are being added frequently http://nsidc.org/data/tools/ *Demonstrated today and tomorrow EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
NSIDC User Support • Online Support • Product description and documentation • Product specific tools • Data access tutorials • User bulletin boards • NSIDC User Services Office and technical staff available during regular business hours • nsidc@nsidc.org • (303) 492-6199 • Donna Scott and Terry Haran here to demonstrate user interfaces, subsetters, converters, and data analysis tools EOS Snow and Ice Products Workshop Marilyn Kaminski, NSIDC November 16, 2004
