Research Shows • Students who complete rigorous academic courses score significantly higher in reading, mathematics and science than those who complete less-demanding courses. (Bottoms, Gene and Cobbs, Mary, 2003)
Guidance Curriculum LessonA total of 8 lessons given during the Freshman Focus Series by counselors each year. • Grade: 9 • September 2007 – June 2008 • Health Classes Lesson 3 and 4 Content: • High School Graduation Requirements • Information about College Prep Courses, Honors, & AP • College Testing (SAT, ACT) • 4-Year Plan (each student completed)
What do they BELIEVE? Strongly Agree/Agree: • I believe that academic planning is valuable to my success in high school • Pre = 48% • Post = 93% • A 94% Increase!
What do they KNOW? • The number of math classes needed to graduate from high school • Pre = 48% • Post = 60% • A 25% Increase
What SKILL did they learn? • Students have the ability to and have completed a 4-year high school plan • Pre = 27% • Post = 89% • A 229% Increase!

Lessons Learned • More effort needs to be spent on assessing students long range results data: i.e. Overall increase in GPA for a semester, Number of F’s, increased attendance, A-G requirements met • Pre-test and Post-test data needs to be complied by the same intern/counselor in order to insure consistent reliable data
Limitations & Implications • More effort needs to be spent on assessing students long range results data: i.e. Overall increase in GPA for a semester, Number of F’s, increased attendance, A-G requirements met • Guidance presentation needs to be more focused on the attitude, knowledge, & skills that will more directly change students’ beliefs and behavior • GPA from 2nd quarter to 3rd quarter went down • Is this a normal trend? • Need to compare 3rd quarter to the year before/next year
Next Steps • Collect long term results data for all 9th graders • Evaluate effectiveness of guidance presentations and make adjustments accordingly • Present results data to faculty and staff • Evaluate presentation through the Guidance Advisory Council
Brea Olinda High School Mission Statement The Brea Olinda Counseling Department will provide all students with a planned and sequential school counseling program that will support the development of academic, personal, and career skills in order to achieve success in school, live productive and rewarding lives, and to become contributing members of society.
