Hazing is an Institution Wide Problem • Hazing is not acceptable in any student organization or team within an educational institution • The obligation to report • All University Staff and Students have an obligation to report hazing activities • “All students, faculty and staff must take reasonable measures within the scope of their individual authority to prevent violations of this policy”

  3. WhyYou Should Report or Stop the Activity • You might be ok with an activity, but not everyone is • You are being lied to • You will not be a better member for it • You will not like the older/active members after it is over • Everyone isn’t doing it • Its not a real tradition or ritual • The people before you didn’t have it worse than you • At some point your organization will be held accountable if it continues • You can be charged criminally • In Tucson, currently 4 high school students are facing felony assault charges for hazing on their wrestling team and two are involved in the juvenile court system facing charges

  4. Common Hazing Practices These would be considered hazing under the context of joining or maintaining membership in a organization or on a team. • Push-ups, sit-ups , running or PT • Providing/encouraging alcohol consumption during organization events • Forced consumption of alcohol • Carrying strange objects or very specific items • Limitations in who they can talk to • Forced consumption of large amounts of liquid • Signature books or paddle signatures • Scavenger hunts with time limits or for meaningless or irrelevant objects • Cleaning organizational or active members’ properties • Running personal errands for active members • Paddling or physically striking in any way • Purchasing items for active members • Capturing or kidnapping new members or actives • Peer pressure for everyone to participate • Singling out an individual or specific group • Encouraging miscellaneous bad judgment • Being yelled at, embarrassed or demeaned
