  9. 21 ST CENTURY SKILLS • BEING PROACTIVE • Being proactive means that you think ahead, take the initiative and make things happen, instead of always reacting to what happens around you • How to Be Proactive at Work: My 5 Step System • Predict- In order to be proactive, you must first develop foresight. Proactive people are rarely caught by surprise. Learn to anticipate problems and events. • Prevent- Proactive people foresee potential obstacles and exert their power to find ways to overcome them before those obstacles turn into concrete roadblocks. • Plan-Proactive people plan for the future. Avoid one-step, “here and now” thinking and instead, look ahead and anticipate long-term consequences. • Participate-Proactive people are not idle observers, they are active participants. In order to be proactive, you must get involved. You have to take initiative and be a part of the solution. • Perform-Being proactive means taking timely, effective action. You must be decisive and willing to do the work NOW. Procrastination is not an option.

  10. 21 ST CENTURY SKILLS • RESILIENCE • This is the ability to cope with challenges or setbacks and turn them into positive, valuable learning experiences • Ways to build resilience at work or in a team: • Treat problems as a learning process. Develop the habit of using challenges as opportunities to acquire or master skills and build achievement. • Avoid making a drama out of a crisis. Stress and change are part of life. How we interpret and respond to events has a big impact of how stressful we find them. • Celebrate your successes. Take time at the end of each day to review what went well and congratulate yourself. • Develop realistic life goals for guidance and a sense of purpose. Do something each day to move towards them. Again, small is beautiful; one small step amid the chaos of a busy day will help. • Nurture a positive view of yourself. Developing confidence in your ability to solve problems and trusting your instincts helps to build resiliency.
