Previous experience • ALFAM project • Ammonia Loss from Field-applied Animal Manure • CH, DE, DK, F, GB, I, N, NL, SE • EU Concerted Action project, FP4 • Databases (measurements, researchers, projects). • Measurement techniques & sensors. • Economic analysis of application techniques. • Review of abatement measures.
Emission measurements • Background • Soil & crop characteristics (pH, crop height etc) • Manure characteristics (TAN etc) • Application techniques (e.g. injection) • Weather (temperature etc) • Ammonia emission • Date and time. • Measurement technique (e.g. wind tunnel)
Results • Statistical analysis. • Empirical model. • Final report. • Website (www.alfam.dk)
Good/bad points • Good • Better understanding of measurement methods. • Overview of important factors. • Networking between researchers. • Bad • Uneven geographic coverage. • Mainly slurry. • Applicability of model.
Ideas for a new project • Focus: • Animal housing. • Manure storage. • (Field application). • All N species, not just ammonia. • Include methodology. • Include economics.
Option 1- ’Cordination Action’ • Mainly pays for meetings & travel, not salaries. • Data collation, analysis, review. • Easier to write? • Greater chance of success? • 100% EU funding. • Re-inforces uneven geographic distribution.
Option 2 – ’Collaborative project’ • Pays meetings, travel & salaries. • Data collation, analysis, review. • Measurements from solid manure. • Measurements from S. and E. Europe. • Capacity-building (knowledge transfer). • Include manure management? • More work to prepare, lower chance of success? • 50% EU funding.
