  10. Compound Information: • Compound 1 – Benzoic Acid • Molecular formula: C7H6O2 • Organic because it contains carbon. • Summary: Benzoic Acid is a colorless crystalline solid and a simple aromatic carboxylic acid. Benzoic Acid is an important precursor for the synthesis of many other organic substances. It is used for the treatment of fungal skin diseases such as tinea, ringworm, and athlete's foot. Benzoic acid was used as an expectorant, analgesic, and antiseptic in the early 20th century.

  11. Compound Information: • Compound 2 - Methylcellulose • Molecular Formula C6H7O2(OH)x(OCH3) • Organic because it contains carbon. • Summary: Methylcelluose is a hydrophilic white powder in pure form and dissolves in cold (but not in hot) water, forming a clear viscous solution or gel. It is sold under a variety of trade names and is used as a thickener and emulsifier in various food and cosmetic products, and also as a treatment of constipation. It is used for constipation because it increases viscosity and it is also in some ice creams.

  12. Compound Information: • Compound 3 – Saccharin • Molecular formula: C7H5NO3S • Organic Because it contains carbon. • Summary: Saccharin is an artificial sweetener. The basic substance, benzoic sulfilimine, has effectively no food energy and is much sweeter than sucrose, but has a bitter or metallic aftertaste, especially at high concentrations. It is used to sweeten products such as drinks, candies, cookies, medicines, and toothpaste. During the early 1970s linked saccharin with the development of bladder cancer in rodents. As a consequence, all food containing saccharin was labeled with a warning.

  13. Compound Information: Compound 4 - Salicylic acid • Molecular formula: C7H6O3 • Organic because it contains carbon. • Summary: Salicylic acid is a monohydroxybenzoic acid, a type of phenolic acid and a beta hydroxy acid. This colorless crystalline organic acid is widely used in organic synthesis and functions as a plant hormone. Salicylic acid has been shown to work through several different pathways. Although toxic in large quantities, salicylic acid is used as a food preservative and as bactericidal and an antiseptic.

  14. Compound Information: • Compound 5 - Sorbic acid • Molecular Formula: C6H8O2 • Organic because it contains carbon. • Summary: Sorbic acid, or 2,4-hexadienoic acid, is a natural organic compound used as a food preservative. Sorbic acid and its salts, such as sodium sorbate, potassium sorbate, and calcium sorbate, are antimicrobial agents often used as preservatives in food and drinks to prevent the growth of mold, yeast, and fungi. In general the salts are preferred over the acid form because they are more soluble in water, but it is the acid form that is active.
