Reflection from Day 1 One thing that you remember from yesterday?
BIE video – PBL – concept • Edutopia video – actual PBL in school-setting
Select content area Issue / problem – (gap: status vs desired; entry event/ scenario) What do you want to do about it? (driving question) Project objectives, target audience Target outputs What (general) activities should be done? What skills and knowledge are needed? Roles? Learning objectives? Which subject area/s or discipline/s should be involved? Workplan
Agenda: Day 2 Session 4: PBL Activity System Design • Introduction to learning activity design for PBL • Collaboration • Groupwork and Presentation: Activity System Design Session 5: ICT-PBL Integration • Introduction to appropriate online/offline ICT tools/resources for PBL and collaborative learning • Hands-on Activities and Groupwork Session 6: Assessment in PBL • Introduction to assessment in PBL • ICT tools for assessment • Hands-on Activities and Groupwork
ICT in Education, APEID UNESCO Bangkok How To DesignProject Based Learning:Activity (System) Design
Overview • PBL Activity (System) Design • Lesson plan design • Learning objectives, timeline, instructional strategies, resources, roles • Group work • group presentations (10 minutes max)
PBL Activity Design • You are to design an “Activity System”, not just an activity. Learning Materials (textbook, ICT, etc) Teacher Learning objectives Learning outcome Rules of interaction Facilitation Students Roles
PBL Activity Design What if you do not pay attention to one or more of the elements? Confusion, frustration, and loads of challenges! Learning Materials (textbook, ICT, etc) Teacher Learning objectives Learning outcome Students Rules of interaction Facilitation Roles
• Workplan: • Specific activities? Dependencies? • Timetable? • Who should be involved? • What resources are needed? • Deliverable at each phase (based on message, target audience, etc.)? • How to assess progress and evaluate achievement of targets?
Time frame Phases / Key Steps
STEP 5. Activity System Design (for teachers) Interim outputs (per project phase)
Why Collaborative Learning? Whydo you think working together (collaboration) is an important skill? What would students benefit from working together?
Collaboration How?? Contribution of talents / expertise? Combination of ideas? Working together Deciding together? With whom? In what way? To what extent? Delegation of tasks? Provide feedback? Exchange information?
In what ways? • Sharing ideas • Research • Peer mentoring • Project management • Producing an output (product or performance) • Collective/Collaborative writing • Campaign/Exhibit materials • Movie production • Etc.
In what ways? Implications on types of interactions, resources, roles
Challenges in Collaborative Learning What do you think would be the challenges in collaborative learning? Keep monitoring your students’ progress!!!!
Principles for Successful Collaborative Learning (with/out ICT) • Have a sound plan! (and talk about it) • Clarify parameters, assumptions, and learning goals • Parameters: participants, processes, timetable, expected outputs • Discuss implications • Pedagogy first then choose technologies!!!! • Set up roles (especially for beginners in PBL) • Discuss and agree on rules of engagement • Agree on evaluation rubrics • Have students reach consensus before taking any action • Encourage participation by showcasing interactions / outputs • Reflection, reflection, reflection! (you and your students)
Your Role in Collaboration What would be your role in this kind of collaborative learning?
STEP 5. Activity System Design (for teachers) In what ways?
Resources / Outputs Newspaper Books Magazines Worksheets Map Encyclopedia TV, radio, movies Classmates, teachers, family Local Officials, Experts, Craftsmen People from the community CDs, tapes, reels Internet Tools Funds Space Journal Mindmap Graphic organizer Survey Report Poster Leaflet Newsletter Story Song / Jingle Script & Drama presentation Movie Hypo-allergenic Herbal Soap Environment-friendly Loi Krathong School Garden design appropriate & relevant
Your task • Break your project and learning objectives into small tasks/steps. • Fill out the activity plan template (Step 5) and collaboration plan (Step 6). • Don’t forget that you are designing an ACTIVITY SYSTEM! • Upload your lesson plan table to the wikispace • group presentations
Short presentation • Title/ Theme • Learning Objectives and Target Students • Project Objectives and Target Audience • Brief Description • Activity Plan (key steps)
