What Is Wikia? • Wikia is a “Wiki Farm” or a wiki hosting service, that acts as a host channel for thousands of wikis. • A “wiki” is a web server that acts as a sort of online encyclopedia, with editors working in collaboration. • Wikia is a website that is home to thousands of wiki’s, each focusing on a different subject matter. • There are wikis on TV shows, video games, and entire fictional universes such as LOTR or DC. 5

What is it used for? • Wikia provides an extensive range of knowledge for entertainment, and lifestyles. • It is used as an encyclopedia for pop culture and aspects of social life such as fashion, cooking. • It is also big in the gaming community. • Wikia offers wikis on games such as League of Legends, Pokemon, and Call of Duty. • These wikis are full of stats, strategies, and other hints for the game. 7

Users • Wikis on Wikia can be used as a user, or an administrator Admins • Users are those who can view the wikis for the information, and add/change to the information on the wiki. Wikis • Admins are heads of a wiki, employed by Wikia, who keep the wiki in check for the users, correcting any errors. 9

Why Does it Matter? • Wikia is becoming a larger and larger database for accessing wikis, and currently has over 370,000 wikis in it’s database. • It has over 100,000,000 users and hundreds of admins employed. • It is rapidly growing, having extended by 347% through mobile phones last year. • It is currently rated as a Top 10 Social Media site by Nielsen Ratings 13
