  2. Ps. Danny Hanafi

  3. Anger • The root of all anger, quarrels, wars: • People don’t get what they want! • We must remember that God has given each of us liberty and free will. • Not even God will intervene our exercise of free will; so why should we? • The question that remain is: does the thing that we want but don’t get has to do with God’s righteousness or our own flesh?

  4. Is Anger a Sin? • Ephesians 4:26-27 (NIV) 26 "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. • There are apparently 2 kinds of anger: • Sinful Anger • Holy Anger

  5. Is Anger a Sin? • Mark 3:1-5 (NIV) 1 Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone.“ 4 Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent.

  6. Is Anger a Sin? • 5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. • John 2:13-17 (NIV) When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

  7. Is Anger a Sin? • 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."

  8. Is Anger a Sin? • Mark 10:13-15 (NLT) One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. 14 When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. 15 I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”

  9. Sinful Anger • Ephesians 4:31 (NIV) Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice (kakia - badness) . • Pikria (poison) - Unresolved Anger • Thumos (kill by fire) - Unrestrained Anger • Orge (violent passion, desire for punishment) - Undying Anger • Krauge (scream) - Unreasonable Anger • Blasphemia – Untruthful Anger

  10. 1. Unresolved Anger • This anger comes from an unwillingness to forgive. • Ephesians 4:26-27 (NIV) "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. • Romans 12:20-21, Therefore if your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in doing so you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  11. 2. Unrestrained Anger • This anger comes from the lust of the flesh. It feels “good” to lash out. • “Thumos” – kill by fire • Where can fire start? In dry places! • Excuse: “I’m just that way, I let out but then I’m OK, and I don’t really mean any harm”

  12. 2. Unrestrained Anger • Psalms 37:7-9 (NLT) 7 Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. 8 Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper— it only leads to harm. 9 For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land.

  13. 2. Unrestrained Anger • Proverbs 14:29 (NIV) A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. • Proverbs 29:22 (NLT) An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin. • Proverbs 22:24-25 (NLT) Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, 25 or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.

  14. 2. Unrestrained Anger • Ecclesiastes 7:9 (NIV) Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools. • Proverbs 12:16 (NLT) A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.

  15. 3. Undying Anger • This anger comes from the lust for revenge. • Don’t get mad; get even! – glorified in movies; but the problem is that is when we get even, we are taking matters in our own hands. We want to see that person suffer. • Romans 12:19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay”, says the Lord.

  16. 3. Undying Anger • Deuteronomy 32:35 (NIV) It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.” • 2 Thessalonians 1:6 (NIV) God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you • Amos 1:11 (NIV) This is what the Lord says: "For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not turn back [my wrath].

  17. 3. Undying Anger • Because he pursued his brother with a sword, stifling all compassion, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked,

  18. 4. Unreasonable Anger • Krauge – scream • Sometimes we scream with the wrong reason, directed to the wrong people • Proverbs 3:30 (NLT) Don’t pick a fight without reason, when no one has done you harm. • Genesis 4:3-7 (NLT) When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought a

  19. 4. Unreasonable Anger • —the best of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift, 5 but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. 6 “Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? 7 You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

  20. 4. Unreasonable Anger • Jonah 4:1-4 (NIV) 1 But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord, "O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.“ 4 But the Lord replied, "Have you any right to be angry?"

  21. 5. Untruthful Anger • This anger considers no truth, being consumed to injure, it resorted to anything, true or not • Blasphemia- blapto and pheme • Blapto – Injure • Pheme – Fame
