CERTIFICATION LEGISLATION • Legislation passed in 2004/2005 • Institutions must certify insurance coverage for athletically-related injuries sustained during covered events • Must be equal or greater than Catastrophic program deductible • Can be provided through: • Parents’ or guardians’ insurance; • Student-athlete’s insurance; or • Institution’s insurance
CERTIFICATION LEGISLATION(continued) • Does institution have to provide the insurance? • No, compliance will vary by institution. WHAT IS THE NCAA GROUP BASICACCIDENT MEDICAL PROGRAM? • Excess medical insurance designed to cover intercollegiate sports-related injuries • Protects the student-athlete and institution below the catastrophic insurance deductible. • Created with NCAA oversight & support in response to member requests • Introduced in 2006 • Currently includes 144 institutions spanning all divisions

CATASTROPHIC INJURY INSURANCE PROGRAM • Policy covers all student-athletes at active member institutions (does not apply to provisional institutions) • Premium 100% paid by the NCAA • Deductible $90,000 ($75,000 for NCAA Basic Accident participants) • Renewed through July 31, 2013
PROGRAM BENEFITS • Medical Benefits • Includes medical, dental, rehabilitation and custodial care • Disability Benefits • Includes disability payments, adjustment expenses, special expenses, college education expenses, and vocational rehabilitation expenses • Death Benefit ($25,000) • Maximum Lifetime Benefit is $20M
REPORTING OF CATASTROPHIC INJURIES • Report serious injuries that may exceed the policy deductible to American Specialty the next business day following the injury
