The Thematic Network Approach Thematic Networks are promoted in order to create frameworks of common interest among the GISIG members and to establish linkages and partnership with various GIS applications domains, users groups and professional operators. The following networks have been started: • ICAM-GISGIS for Integrated Coastal Area Management, jointly promoted by ICCOPS and GISIG • NATURE-GISGIS for protected areas and nature conservation • WATER-GISGIS for Water Environment, jointly promoted by Techware and GISIG

INSPIRE & NATURE-GIS INSPIRE Principles • Information should be managed as closely as possible to its source; • Information is provided once and shared with others for many purposes; • Information should be accessible to enable clients to make comparisons at the appropriate geopgraphical scale (e.g. countries, cities, catchment areas); • Information should be made available to the puplic after due consideration of the appropriate level of aggregation, given possible confidentiality constraints, and at national level in the national language(s); In parallel with the definition of the INSPIRE Directive: IST Nature-GIS project A European thematic network for Protected Areas / Nature Preservation and Geographical Information

  7. The Nature-GIS Guidelines What are they for? To provide in a single volume the salient findings of the project and to draw “best practice” indications for the discovery, access and use of geo-spatial data on protected areas They are divided into three parts - Nature-GIS context - Nature-GIS Survey - Nature-GIS Architecture They are available on Internet as well (www.gisig.it)

GI-INDEED exploitation • Possibility to access the GI-INDEED Training Package • Definition of new use cases (Coastal Areas Module) • The GI-INDEED Modules will be part of VESTA-GIS (included in the VESTA-GIS course catalogue) • E-learning platform (tools) and approach for training material organisation (including the course selector), useful for other initiatives.

VESTA-GIS at a glance The aim is to to pool knowledge in the GIS domain (technology, applications), to share experience and foster innovation in vocational training by bringing together experts, organisations and users of GI and its application domains, as well as to identify the trends and skills requirements in this area and to improve the anticipated benefit of vocational training initiatives. The following main activities are foreseen: • Network Building and sharing knowledge • Analysis of training course offer and demand • Implementation of the Network training framework • Implementation of an e-learning platform • Training course catalogue building. • Promotion of people mobility • Exploitation and dissemination actions

VESTA-GIS at a glance The network will be developed in the favourable framework of the new European Directives for environment and territory, which are dealing with problems that have reached a new European dimension (such as the INSPIRE Directive recently approved by the European Parliament). The project focuses in particular on these application domains: • Water Resource Management • Natural Environment Protection • Coastal Management and Landscape

VESTA-GIS target group • GI potential and actual users in the different EU Countries; • providers of GIS training (both professional operators and GI experts and Academy); • officers of Administrations (main users of geo-information); • environmental operators; • companies providing GI services; • fresh graduates approaching the labour market;

  21. VESTA-GIS Certificate • Based on ECVET - European Credit system for Vocational and Educational Training – principles, now under discussion at the EU level • It is based upon the EUROPASS system • Link with European Computer Driving Licence
