  4. Data Storage Requirements • The number of e-mail messages sent daily: -In 1995: 400,000,000 -In 2000: 9,700,000,000 -In 2007: 35,000,000,000 • Data storage was server-centric, now businesses have to focus on information, sharing material via storage networking environments.

  5. Business Needs • Scalability means different things to different organizations. IT departments need to scale different aspects of their infrastructure to meet specific business needs: • Capacity • Connectivity • Bandwidth

  6. Performance Needs • A large percentage of the data that is sent across the LAN is either coming from or going to storage. Eighty percent of enterprises will see their LAN bandwidth requirements triple in the next year as information is being used more heavily throughout the organization.

  7. Storage Networking & Performance • Directly attached storage (DAS) maintains one server as the point of access to each resource. • Storage networks alleviate the single-server bottleneck by allowing multiple servers to access the same storage devices and resources.

  10. Trends • Raw cost of storage is declining rapidly • By 2007, 80% of IT investments are expected to focus on storage, versus 20% in 1995. • Many companies are beginning to look to outsourcing to meet storage needs.

  11. Opportunities • By 2007, over 3.8 exabytes of external storage will have been sold. • The majority will be networked storage.

  13. Imaging Apps. and Markets • The imaging industry was the first to recognize the need for SANs. • Apps include:-Digital Media Production-Pre-press Production-Document Imaging-Medical & Scientific Imaging • Key markets include entertainment, healthcare, and scientific research.

  14. Content Distribution Apps. and Markets • Apps. include:-Web and application hosting services-Digital Broadcasting-On-demand Media-Messaging • Markets include ISPs, ASPs, SSps, Wireless Content Providers, and Media Distributors.

  15. SAN Value Proposition • Storage networking solutions reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of storage. • They offer better value than directly attached storage systems. • Many businesses see a return of investment (ROI) in 2 years, some in less.
