  2. The BIG Idea • Our group’s final project focuses on our idea for the creation and promotion of an ethical resources software program that will be to distributed to Penn State University Students.

  3. Introductory Background • This software has two key components. • The program contains resources to aide students in learning ethical frameworks. • A pop-up ethics assistant that guides users through making ethical decisions while using the Internet. • Both components are intertwined. The concept for this software is comparable to a virus scanner. There is a main component that is user accessed while the other is constantly working behind the scenes.

  4. Target Audience • YOU! • The primary audience being targeting are male and female Penn State students ages 17-24. • The primary focus will be on incoming freshmen at Penn State University. • Software will allow students to make an informed decision on their potential actions.

  5. Misconceptions • The ethics assistant may be viewed as an invasion of the user’s privacy. • While it does oversee user tendency while using the Internet, it is simply a guide that aides in determining whether or not a potential action would be considered ethical based off the frameworks studied this semester. • It will never prevent a user from doing a certain action; just help them strive to make better ethical decisions.

  6. User Evaluation • Upon installation of the software, the user will take an ethics evaluation. • The results will let the ethics assistant know which framework to judge the users actions by. • Depending on the framework, the ethics assistant will ask a series of questions within that theory to determine whether or not the user’s potential action is considered ethical.

Class Evaluation Results • http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3PZPW6Q • Total Completed Surveys: 24 • Information Ethics: 20% • Virtue Ethics: 30% • Deontological Ethics: 20% • Consequentialist Ethics: 30% • In the event of a tie, the program would ask five additional questions involving those two frameworks. • The framework with the highest percentage of answers will be the framework used to judge the user’s potential actions in the future.

  8. Program Features • Program Features Include: • A key term list defining terms and phrases used in the world of ethics. • Outlines of each of the ethical frameworks studied this semester. • Readings from philosophers. • Video lectures. • A question search engine, that links key words in the question to terms, outlines, readings, and video lectures that will provide an answer. • The user evaluation, which establishes the users most prevalent ethical framework.

  9. Ethics Assistant • The pop-up ethics assistant is represented by a nittany lion cartoon. • The ethics assistant has many comparable traits and mannerisms to the Microsoft Office paper clip. • Once the ethics assistant recognizes a user is about to take a certain action (illegally download a song, cheat on an online exam) it will pop up and begin asking the user questions within that user’s prevalent ethical framework. • Based on the responses, it will determine if the action is ethically acceptable and bring up a resource from the program to prove it.

  10. Illegal Downloads: Information Ethics • IE evaluates the duty of any moral agent in terms of contribution to the growth of the infosphere. Any process, action, or event that negatively affects the infosphere is viewed as an instance of evil.

  11. Illegal Downloads: Virtue Ethics • VE focuses on a desirable or morally valuable character trait. These traits are embedded deep within the processer and guides an individual’s actions.

  12. Illegal Downloads: Deontological Ethics • DE judges the morality of an action based on the action’s adherence to rules and duties. These obligations are what drive an individual to perform or refrain from performing certain actions.

  13. Illegal Downloads: Consequentialist Ethics • CE judges an action based on the positive or negative results yielded from that action. Positive results are considered acceptable. Negative results are considered unacceptable.
