3. Common Nouns vs. Proper Nouns A proper noun is the NAME of a particular person, place or thing.
A common noun is the name of any one or more than one person, place or thing.
For example:
school is a common noun
Mercy Vocational High School is a proper noun
ALL PROPER NOUNS GET CAPITALIZED!!
4. VERB A verb is an ACTION word
It is what the subject of the sentences is DOING
Examples:
is, work, smell, do, hold,
5. Rule Every sentence must have both a noun and a verb
Example: The simplest sentences is:
“I am.”
6. ADJECTIVE An adjective is a word that DESCRIBES a noun.
It usually come before the word that it describes
Examples:
beautiful, scary, mean, many, few
7. ADVERB An adverb is a word that describes a verb
It usually shows HOW something is done
For example:
slowly, quickly, etc…
It also can describe an adjective
For example:
He is very fast.
8. PRONOUN A pronoun can replace a specific noun to make the sentence less repetitive.
Examples:
he, she, I, you, we, they, it
9. Conjunction A conjunction is a word that connects two phrases in a sentence.
For example:
and, but, or, yet, for, nor, so
because, before, since
10. Preposition A preposition is a word that links nouns or pronoun to other words in a sentence.
Many times it explains distance or space
Example
The book was on the table.
11. about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, by, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, out, outside, over, past, since, through, throughout, till, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, within, without
12. Interjection An interjection is an exclamation that shows emotion.
It is not necessary for the meaning of the sentence.
Examples: Ouch! Yippee! Aw!
