Parts of a Map • Key – explains the symbols used on a map • Boundary Lines – highlights the borders between countries or other regions • Compass rose – a marker that indicates the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) • Cities – represented by a dot • Capitals – national capitals are represented (usually) by a star with a circle • Scale bar – shows the scale distance used on a map
Using Scale • Scale – a proportion between the distance on a map and the distance in real life • Small scale maps – shows a large area but not a lot of detail • Large scale maps – show a small area but a lot of detail
Types of Maps • General Purpose Maps – show a wide range of information about an area • Physical maps – shows the location and topography (physical features) • Political maps – show the boundaries between countries or states. Often include human-made features • Special Purpose Maps – emphasize a single idea or particular piece of information
