What kind of questions are they going to ask you? • Questions usually fall into one or two of the following categories: • Setting • Character (development, relationship or an important/main character) • Theme (main ideas) • Specific scene(s)/important episodes and/or beginning and/or ending • Mood/tone/atmosphere
What questions should you choose? • The following kinds of questions will work well for our film: • Setting • Relationships • Character development (Emily Leighton specifically) • Theme (always a good option) • Specific scene(s)- we have looked at the opening and the force-feeding scene.
Setting • Things they might ask could include: • How it relates to theme/helps to develop theme? • How is your first impression established? • How and why is the setting important? • How does it help to reveal/develop character?
Character Development • Emily Leighton is the best character you could write on for this as she undergoes a significant amount of change in the film. • Often they will ask you about how techniques (visual) have helped to develop this change. • Consider why this change is important? • How does it relate to our themes?
Character • Important characters- the best choices you can make here are Alice Paul or Emily Leighton. • Usually this will involve discussion of production techniques used to develop your impression or understanding of the character and/or why they are important to the text as a whole.
Relationships • There are a range of relationships you could focus on. • Emily and her husband • NAWSA and NWP • Suffrage Movement and the government • Alice and Ben Weissman • Alice and Lucy • Emily and the Suffrage Movement. • Usually they will ask you about important relationships, how they change, why they are important, how they help us to understand main ideas etc…
Theme • You can write about any of the themes we have discussed- however different themes may better suit different kinds of questions. • They may ask you about theme in conjunction with: • Setting • Character (a main character or character development) • Specific scene(s) or a comparison of opening and closing • How film techniques help to develop a theme • Symbols
Specific scenes • These questions almost always ask for some kind of discussion on: • Character • Theme • Setting • Production techniques • Atmosphere/mood/tone • And how these things are developed in the selected scene.
Things to remember • Remember to refer to/use in each paragraph of your essay: • Quotes • Film/production techniques • Director’s purpose
