What is Bourbon? • A distinctive American whiskey • Bourbon is the only federally regulated liquor • Rules governing bourbon: • Must be aged at least 2 years in new, charred American white oak barrels • Must be at least 51% corn • Must be aged at not more than 125 proof and bottled at not less than 80 proof • No artificial colorings or flavors can be added
Brief History of Bourbon • First settlers came to Kentucky in 1775 to grow corn & tobacco • Whiskey became a cost-effective way to utilize extra corn • By 1800, whiskey & tobacco were chief exports of Kentucky • Much folklore surrounding the name “bourbon” • Bourbon officially protected since 1964
Tasting Bourbon • Bourbon is very diverse depending on its ingredients, aging time, proof and quality • Several cocktails can be made with Bourbon including manhattans, old-fashioneds and the Washington Apple
