  3. What is Accelerated Reading? ‘is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.’ AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on quiz results which the teacher then uses to help children set targets and direct ongoing reading practice.

  4. How DOES it work? Pupils take initial test Pupils are given a ZPD mark – (Zone of proximal development). The expected range in year 7 is 3.4 - 5.4.

  5. Time to read Minimum time recommended by Renaissance Learning Pupils should pick books in the ZPD and spend a minimum of 15 minutes readingper day. More able pupils read for longer per day. Teachers can change the reading times on the target setting sheet.

  7. After the quiz Pupils should aim to get 85%. Pupils’ results will mean they can move up in their ZPD. Pupils will receive certificates after making progress

  8. TOPS REPORT Teachers will remind pupils that as soon as they have completed a quiz they can generate a TOPS report.

  9. Benefits of TOPS REPORT • Pupils access their own reports to see their next book level and the list of books they have read. • This way pupils take ownership of their reading

  10. Intervention • Subject teacher action • Use diagnostic reports to identify pupils who are not taking quizzes / reading Subject teacher intervention • Mentoring of pupil during library lesson • Listen to pupil read • Support pupil in choice of text • PL tutors can do exactly the same.

  11. Tutor time - Expectations All pupils and staff carry a book / reading material with them at all times. KS3 – AR book KS4 / KS5 Book / Newspapers Boxes of newspapers

Accessing books Learning Resource Centre (LRC) open between 8am and 3.30pm on school days Students supported in choice of text by teachers and librarians Non-fiction and non-AR reading also encouraged Students encouraged to loan subject-specific books recommended by all teachers Students encouraged to suggest new titles for the LRC www.arbookfind.co.uk

  17. Attendance and Time Keeping • Minimum expectations for Students are; • Attend at the level of 95% throughout the year • Be on time every day and to every lesson • first lesson begins at 8.15 a.m. • Students need to be outside the lesson • for 8.10 a.m.

  18. For 100% attendance students should attend school for 190 days. As a school day is divided into two sessions, pupils should therefore attend for 380 sessions. • One day off per school year means that a pupil has about 99.5% attendance. 5 lessons missed • Ten days off per school year means that a pupil has about 94.7% attendance. 50 lessons missed • Twenty days off per school year means that a pupil has about 90% attendance. 100 lessons missed

  19. 90% attendance means 4 whole academic weeks off school per year. 90% attendance throughout Years 7 – 11 means half a year off school. 73% of students who have 95% attendance and above achieve5 A*-C grades including English and Maths. However 65% of students who have a 90% attendance record and below will not achieve 5 A*-C grades at GCSE.
