WhyStandards? “Standards guide instructionthat is focused on student learning.” “Standards serve as a basis for instructional planning that ensures all teachers first consider what they want students to know and be able to do as a result of their instruction.” ODE INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, 2005
Traditional: Teacher/Librarian centered Stand-alone skills Fixed schedule Teacher/Librarian selects materials Local control of collections, textbooks, curriculum- Standards-based: Student centered Collaboration Flexible schedule Teacher requests & recommendations Student Assessment Collection, textbooks, curriculum based on state standards Traditional vs. Standards-based Program
FIVE STAGES of PLANNING for STANDARDS-BASED EDUCATON: • Content: Determine what needs to be taught (using the academic content standards as a guide); • Assessment: Plan effective ways to assess student learning, before learning, during learning and after learning; • Data Analysis: Identify the types of data that will be collected and consider how they will be analyzed to make data-based planning decisions; • Instruction: Consider the effective ways to teach the content to a range of student learners, differentiating instruction as needed to meet the needs of all learners; • Materials: Use criteria to select materials and resources that can support teaching and learning. Student Learning “The school library introduced me to the INFOhio web site which helped me find sources for my research paper. Because of that I was able to put forth 100% effort, remember my work and get a really good grade on the paper.” Student Voices, The Ohio Study, 2004 INFORMATIONAL – TRANSFORMATIONAL – FORMATIONAL
