Habitat • The artic tern breeds in the Artic Circle, but flies to the Antarctic Ice Pack each winter. It flies roughly the circumference of the earth. • The artic tern uses rock cliffs for a nest. It lays its eggs on bare rock.
Adaptation • Artic terns can hover in midair. This is important • when it fishes. • Artic tern eggs are the same color as their nest. • This gives them camouflage.

Interesting Facts • Artic tern eggs are laid in grassy areas for protection from predators and because there are no trees in the Artic. • During courtship male terns fly a “fish flight”. They catch a small fish and fly as low as they can to a female on the ground. If she notices him she will join him and will mate soon. • Artic terns do everything to stay out of water. They don’t swim well even though they have webbed feet.
