  2. Mpumalanga - "the place where the sun rises" - is a province with spectacular scenic beauty and an abundance of wildlife, lying in the northeast of South Africa. Bordered by the countries of Mozambique and Swaziland to the east and the province of Gauteng to the west, it is situated mainly on the high plateau grasslands of the Middleveld, which roll eastwards for hundreds of kilometers. In the northeast, it rises towards mountain peaks and terminates in an immense escarpment. In places this escarpment plunges hundreds of meters down to the low-lying area known as the Lowveld. In the eastern region lies the southern half of the magnificent Kruger National Park, a nature reserve teeming with African wildlife in a total area roughly the size of Israel. Mpumalanga is highly accessible, with a network of excellent roads and railway connections, as well as a number of small airports. The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport became operational in 2002. Nelspruit is the capital, and the administrative and business hub of the Lowveld. Witbank is the centre of the local coal-mining industry; Standerton, in the south, is known for its large dairy industry; and Piet Retief in the southeast is a production area for tropical fruit and sugar. What is unique to the Province?

  3. Despite the light of the sun we also generate electricity from coal in the Province. Two large sugar industry are found at Malelane in the east; Ermelo is the district in South Africa that produces the most wool; Barberton is one of the oldest gold-mining towns in South Africa; and Sabie is situated in the forestry heartland of the country. The Maputo Development Corridor, which links the province with Gauteng and the Port of Maputo in Mozambique, heralds a new era of economic development and growth for the region. As the first international toll road in Africa, the corridor is set to attract investment and release the local economic potential of the landlocked parts of the country. Mpumalanga is a popular tourist destination. What is unique to the Province?

  4. Mpumalanga Province has a population of approximately 3 365 886 and is dominated by Africans as they count to 93% of the total population. Almost 61% of the population resides on the rural areas whilst 39% on the urban areas. According to the 2001 Census, 27.5% of the population aged 20 years or older had no formal school education, and 41% of those in the age group of 15-64 were unemployed. Almost 55% of the province’s population lived below the national poverty line in 2002 (UNDP, 2004) About 67% of all households lived in formal dwellings, and 16% and 13% in informal and traditional structures respectively. On average, 4 persons shared a household. Approximately 80 000 undocumented persons are found in the area. Due to it’s proximity to Swaziland and Mozambique the integrity of the country is seriously challenged by the porousness of our border lines. What is unique to the Province?

  20. Fourteen (14) Hospitals were already computerised as part of the online birth and death registration campaign. These hospitals are: Rob Ferreira Hospital - Nelspruit Shongwe Hospital - Nkomazi Temba Hospital - Nsikazi Embhuleni Hospital - Eerstehoek Ermelo Hospital - Ermelo Kwa-Mhlanga Hospital - Kwa-Mhlanga Middelburg Hospital - Middelburg Witbank Hospital - Witbank Lydenburg Hospital - Lydenburg Amsterdam Hospital - Ermelo Barberton Hospital - Barberton Mapulaneng Hospital - Mhala Matikwane Hospital - Mkhuhlu Tintswalo Hospital - Acornhoek More hospitals have been identified, but they cannot accommodate us currently due to upgrading that is either taking place or will take place in the near future. MOBILE UNITS • Twelve (12) trucks have been received for this province. • The trucks were allocated to districts where there are large rural areas where there are no infrastructure of Service Points. These areas are: • Eerstehoek • Nkomazi • Ermelo • Kwa-Mhlanga • Nelspruit • Witbank (x2) • Nsikazi (White River) • Mhala (x2) • Lydenburg • Mmamehlake Caring, compassionate and responsive

  26. Regional Office Witbank and District Offices Barberton and Lydenburg are currently on RAMP. The progress at all three offices are good. Regional Office Nelspruit and District Office Mhala has been put on the footprint for the upgrading of offices by the Turn-around team The tender for accommodation for Secunda (Evander) will go out during May 2008 from DPW. Landlords are busy with the upgrading of the ccommodation for the new Service Points at Daantjie, Msogwaba, Mgobodzi and Mbangwane. District Office: Nsikazi will move to White River during May 2008. The new landlord is currently busy with the final changes to the office. Possible accommodation have been found for the following new district offices: Mapulaneng, Standerton, Volksrust, Siyabushwa and Belfast. DPW in the process of negotiations. Specifications for accommodation at two new Thusong Service Centres were provided to DPW. They are Thuthukane and Marapyane. OFFICE ACCOMMODATION

  27. There is a possibility of alternative accommodation for District Office Kwa-Mhlanga. The accommodation will be viewed by DPW. Office space, in the old Post Office Building, was viewed by DPW in Balfour for a service point. The problems that were experienced at District Office Hazyview (leakages and smell) have been resolved by the landlord. DPW is however currently investigating the possibility of obtaining alternative accommodation. OFFICE ACCOMMODATION

  28. All offices have faxes, photocopiers. Track and Trace machines were installed in all Regional and District Offices. Fax – photocopy combination machines have been purchased for seven service points during the year. New furniture was also purchased for these seven service points. Furniture was also purchased for the new office in White River. OFFICE EQUIPMENT

  29. Security at offices remains a problem as funds are not available to procure the services of security companies. Currently we have security at: Regional Office: Witbank, Nelspruit and Ermelo and at District Office: Eerstehoek. There are security cameras and a metal detector at Nelspruit. During the next financial year it was requested that security cameras be installed at Ermelo, Eerstehoek, White River and Mhala. RAMP will also install security equipment at Witbank, Barberton and Lydenburg. OFFICE SECURITY

  30. There are currently 134 vehicles in the Province. 52 Sedans 62 Bakkies 8 Trucks (repatriation) of which 1 is in the process to be written off 12 Mobile Units VEHICLES
