DEFINITIONS OF “ORGANELLE” YOUR TEXTBOOK “Any membrane-bound, intracellular structure structure that is specialized for carrying out a particular function.” BIOLOGY 111 TEXT “One of several formed bodies with a specialized structure, suspended in the cytoplasm and found in eukaryotic cells” 1999 “Any of several membrane-enclosed structures with specialized functions, suspended in the cytosol of eukaryotic cells.” 2009
MITOCHONDRION (A membrane-bound organelle) RIBOSOMES ON RER RIBOSOMES are recognizable cellular structures with a specific function. I call ribosomes organelles.
The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle. The nucleolus is also an organelle, but it is not itself membrane-bound. There is no “nucleolar membrane”. The nucleolus is a recognizable cellular structure with one or more specialized functions. It is an organelle.
PROKARYOTIC CELLS ALSO HAVE ORGANELLES! THYLAKOID MEMBRANES CHROMOSOME RIBOSOME CARBOXYSOME PHYCOBILISOME A CYANOBACTERIUM (A PROKARYOTIC CELL)
AN ORGANELLE IS A RECOGNIZABLE CELLULAR STRUCTURE THAT PERFORMS ONE OR MORE SPECIALIZED FUNCTIONS. - organelles are found in eukaryotic cells AND prokaryotic cells - organelles are found in the nucleus as well as in the cytoplasm - organelles do not have to be surrounded by a membrane - if a term ends in “-some” it is certainly refers to an organelle!
