  1. Music of the Decades Group Members: Kyle Pavek, Amanda Fett, Kim Watkins, Angela Boughton, Kate Karschnik, Kaitlyn True, John Barrick, Joe Pfannschmidt, and others

  2. 1920’s: The Roarin’ 20’s • The 1920’s is known as the Jazz Age and it gave a whole new meaning to “Night on the Town” • Night clubs were becoming popular, the radio made the scene, the Prohibition occurred as well as the closing of New Orleans Port • Fletcher Henderson, Eubie Blake, and Louis Armstrong were popular artists from this decade • Ben Hur was a popular musical movie during this time period.

  4. 1930’s: Depression Era • This was the time of the Great Depression and music was in the background during this time. • Some music was helpful throughout this though. Hits from Yip Harburg, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey. • Music during this time was considered to be inspiring. Swing music was really popular during this era. • Of Mice and Men was a popular music movie from this decade.

  5. The Depression was healed By the Art of Swing

Bluegrass, Jazz, Doo Wop, Swing, and Gospel were genres that were popular during this time and would later form to become Rock N’ Roll. • There was a decline in the Big Band Era caused by World War II. • During the 40’s, a recording ban was taking place and records were legally made again until January of 1949. • Popular artists include: Frank Sinatra, Jimmie Rodgers, Moon Mullican, Bob Wills, Willie Nelson, Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin • Casablanca was a popular movie that made an impact in music as well during this decade. 1940’s: Big Band Era

  7. The Big Band Era 1940’s

America was starting to get back on its feet after World War II, which led to many wanting a change – this change in music was Rock N’ Roll. • Rock N’ Roll was a very influential genre and it changed the music industry forever. Older generations disliked this music, calling it “the devil’s music.” • Famous artists from this time included: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and many more. • Elvis Presley made a huge impact on the world and became the “King of Rock” • One of the most musically influential movies was Luck Be A Lady. 1950’s: Age of New Music

  10. During the 1960’s, the Rock N’ Roll genre was still very popular and music was starting to become life for this generation. Funk music became very popular. • The 60’s was a time of craziness: the assassination of JFK and MLK, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Music seemed like an escape. • Popular artists from the decade include: Bobby Darin, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and more. • A popular music festival in this time was known as Woodstock, held in the August of ‘69. • Hard Day’s Night was another popular music movie during this time. 1960’s: Music Takes A Leap

  12. 1970’s: Rock, Funk, and Crazy • Music was starting to change America in that new generations were starting to take ideas and act for themselves. • Using drugs and alcohol and having long hair were a means of escape from reality. • Popular artists from this decade include: Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, The Ramones, AC/DC, James Brown, LynyrdSkynyrd and more. • Star Wars had a very popular music theme in the movie franchise.

  13. 1970’s: Era of Freedom in Music

  14. 1980’s: Sex, Drugs, and Rock N’ Roll • The 80’s were known as the era of drugs, sex, and music. These three things made the younger generations feel more independent. • Famous Artists: Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Kiss, Twisted Sister, Duran Duran and many more. • Michael Jackson made a major impact on the world with his music and became the “King of Pop.” • Rocky and the Indiana Jones franchise were both popular for their music themes in this decade.

  16. The Music of the 90’s and Today • The 90’s was an era of pop and hip-hop music. From Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, and Nsyncto Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Lil Kim and others, this decade was full of great music. • While pop was rising to fame, hip-hop/rap artists were having a war. The East Coast/West Coast war between Bad Boy Records and Death Row Records. This war ended eventually, but with the deaths of Tupac and Notorious B.I.G., it remained significant in music history. • The music of today is known as the Era of Variety. Country was popular throughout the decade and other genres including – pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop, rap and more – also made an impact. • Famous artists include: Justin Timberlake, Jewel, Pussycat Dolls, Pink, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn, The Killers, Slipknot, Evanescence, Green Day, Paramore, Eminem, Lil Wayne, T.I., Kanye West, Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas, and many more. • Napster and Itunes were popular forms of downloading music – this was illegal at first and there was a major legal dispute, but all was solved – and being able to listen to music hits that one loves. American Idol was a show that helped artists like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson make it big. Cd’s died out as MP3 players and Ipods were becoming more popular. • A major movie that had an impact in the 90’s was a Disney hit, The Lion King, based on a popular broadway show. Pirates of the Caribbean was a major movie franchise that had a popular theme in the 2000’s decade.
