Deeply divided along religious lines, the Muslims are predominantly in the north, while the Christians hold their ground in the south of the country. • Constitutionally Nigeria is a secular state with freedom of religion. Since 1999 Shari’a Law has been imposed in 12 northern States, to the resentment of Christians. • Muslim extremism has not eased. More than 2,000 believers killed in 2010 in northern states. In April 2011, soon after the presidential elections, many churches were burnt down and more than 200 Christians killed in Kaduna state. • The World Watch List ranking for 2012 stands at the 13th position.
IDOP CANADA – Nigeria 2012 Nigeria • Challenges Before Nigerian Christians • In Northern Nigeria the pressure on Muslim-background believers (MBBs) is increasing and many are struggling to survive due to the pressure from their families who cut them off. • Many Muslim-background believers women have been divorced by their Muslim husbands for converting to Christ. • Islamic clerics continue to preach hate messages. • Hundreds of Christians have lost their lives in the many violent attacks that have taken place against Christians in the North. • Moreover, Christians living in Shari’a dominated areas are threatened if they do not adhere to Shari’a Law.
IDOP CANADA – Nigeria 2012 Nigeria • Recent Incidents of Persecution • Christian mother of five is killed by soldiers part of inter-religious youth fighting. They shoot her in her home in the Yelwa area of Bauchi city. • In Maiduguri, Mark Ojunta, a 36-year-old evangelist was shot dead while ministering amid the Kotoko people. • In Maiduguri a Church of Christ pastor, David Usman (45), and church secretary Hamman Andrew, were also shot by members of Boko Haram. • Christians in Bauchi and Maidurguri faced threats from the deadly Islamic sect of Boko Haram. As a result Christian-owned businesses and shops were forced to shut down and flee from the area.
IDOP CANADA – Nigeria 2012 Nigeria • Prayer Points • Pray that the church in Northern Nigeria will not become discouraged and weary. • Pray that the government will be wise and decisive in its actions. • Pray that God will protect all the Christians living in the midst of danger, fear and uncertainty in cities like Jos, bringing them into a time of spiritual revival. • Pray for forgiveness for persecutors and deliverance from a spirit of revenge. • Pray that many will be able to come alongside the churches in northern Nigeria to provide strategic training seminars on prayer, love, forgiveness and spiritual warfare focused on key youth leaders.
