The day it happens March 21 in the northern hemisphere is when night and day are nearly the same length. The Sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward. In the southern hemisphere, it is a vernal equinox when the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward. This occurs on the date of the northern autumnal equinox. Equinox literally means "equal night”.
