Laser-wire at the ATF extraction line People involved Goals Features Schedules Current status Summary February 2005 http://www-pnp.physics.ox.ac.uk/~delerue/laserwire/atf.php
People and institutes involved • University of Oxford:Nicolas Delerue, Brian Foster, David Howell, Armin Reichold • Royal Holloway University London:Ilya Agapov, Grahame Blair, Gary Boorman, John Carter, Chafik Driouichi, Michael Price • University College London:Stewart Boogert, Steve Malton • KEK:Hitoshi Hayano, Pavel Karataev, Kiyoshi Kubo, Junji Urakawa • SLAC:Josef Frisch, Marc Ross
Goals and requirements Goal: Measure the electron beam profile with a resolution of 1 micrometer. To achieve this we need • A high power laser to produce enough photons • A lens to focus the laser to a spot size of ~1micrometer. • Basic laser and accelerator diagnostics tools Simulations with CAIN
Features of our system(still under discussion) • Focusing of the laser to a 1 micrometer spot size • Focusing optics outside the vacuum (makes the design easier) • The vacuum window will be made of optical glass differentially pumped • Laser diagnostics outside the vacuum • OTR in the vacuum vessel • Coarse scanning of the electron beam by the laser done by moving the vacuum vessel and the focusing optics • Fine scanning done in the laser hut • Use relay optics to repeat the fine scanning at the Interaction Point
Schedules for 2005 • March: Trip to KEK to study the photon detector (APD), the laser and the DAQ. • May-June: Trip to KEK to finalize the DAQ issues and prepare laser optics • July: Commissioning of the vacuum vessel in Oxford • August: Vacuum vessel shipped to KEK • September: Installation of the vacuum vessel in the ATF extraction line and installation of the laser focusing optics • November & December: Commissioning of the full system and (hopefully) first profile measurements
Current status • The laser focusing lens is being designed • Interactions of the laser and the electron beam with our proposed parameters (strong focusing,…) have been studied • Test lab in Oxford is almost completed • Vacuum vessel design will be completed by the end of the month. • We will come to the ATF in March.Goals of our trip in March: • Do a wire-scanner measurement with our DAQ • Study the high power laser • Study the beam jitter • Gain experience of ATF operations
Summary • We want to measure the beam profile at the ATF with a resolution of 1 micrometer • A lens focusing the laser to 1 micrometer is being designed • Design of the vacuum vessel is under-way • We will come 4 times to the ATF before the end of the year to prepare our measurement • We aim to do a first profile measurement before the end of 2005. http://www-pnp.physics.ox.ac.uk/~delerue/laserwire/atf.php
