  2. A Learning EnvironmentDiscipline Not Punishment The Student Achievement Intervention Lab (SAIL) class is designed to provide an effective discipline strategy which serves students by offering them the chance to overcome a potentially negative learning situation with a positive one.

Public Act No 07-66An Act Concerning In-School Suspensions NEW“ Suspensions pursuant to this section shall be in-school suspensions, unless during the hearing held pursuant to subsection (a) of this section, the administration determines that the pupil being suspended poses such a danger to persons or property or such a disruption of the educational process that the pupil shall be excluded from school during the period of suspension

  4. PROCEDURES PRIOR TO FORMAL DISCIPLINE Step One: Instructor meets with student regarding incident. Pre-referral classroom strategies should be implemented. Step Two: Instructor informs parent of incident and consults with a member of Pupil Service Staff regarding student behavior.

  5. FORMAL DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES Step One: If behavior persists, instructor has formal consultation with Department Head. Step Two: Department Head meets with student and informs parent of on-going behavior. Step Three: Student is referred to Assistant Principal. Step Four: An option available to Assistant Principal may include assignment of student to the SAIL program. Step Five: Administrator completes SAIL referral form.

SAIL PROGRAM PROTOCOL • SAIL instructor notifies attendance clerk of students in SAIL program. • Instructor will meet with individual student to review plan and determine materials needed for satisfactory completion of academic/technology assignments. • A complete student packet includes: Referral form Student schedule Academic/technology assignments from all instructors

  8. D.SAIL instructor will contact clerk for any missing assignments. E. Instructor will conduct general Orientation to the SAIL program. Review rules and obtain student signature. Initiate LSCI F. Attendance clerk will notify Pupil Service staff members. Pupil Service staff member will counsel student on alternative strategies prior to returning to the regular educational program. H. Student completes academic packet with assistance from SAIL instructor.

  9. I. SAIL instructor reviews academic packet with student and determines satisfactory completion. J. SAIL instructor assigns appropriate Behavioral Learning Packet. K. Student completes Behavioral Learning Packet with assistance from SAIL instructor. J. SAIL instructor reviews Behavioral Learning Packet with student and determines satisfactory completion. L. If supplemental materials are necessary, the SAIL instructor will assign appropriate lessons for completion. M. SAIL instructor will complete behavioral evaluation sheet for each student assigned to the SAIL program.

  10. At the end of the day, SAIL instructor will return all completed academic/technical assignments to the individual instructors. (mailbox) It is essential that each student remains actively engaged in appropriate activities at all times.

  11. IF A STUDENT DIVULGES ANY INFORMATION THAT INDICATES THEY WILL, OR INTEND TO HARM THEMSELVES OR OTHERS, AN ADMINISTRATOR OR PUPIL SERVICE STAFF MEMBER MUST BE CONTACTED IMMEDIATELY. IF A STUDENT IS NON-COMPLIANT, INSUBORDINATE OR DISTURPTIVE WHILE IN THE SAIL PROGRAM, HE/SHE WILL BE IMMEDIATELY REFERRED TO THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

ADMINISTRATIVE & CLERICAL PROTOCOL • Administrator notifies appropriate clerical person with the SAIL referral form. • Clerical person prints student schedule and contacts instructors to collect assignment packets. • If possible, student is escorted to their locker to obtain necessary materials to complete assignments. • Clerical person gives SAIL instructor a completed folder which includes: Referral form Student schedule Academic/technology assignments from all instructors E. Clerical person copies SAIL referral form and forwards to appropriate Pupil Personnel staff member.

The work will be returned to you in your mailbox following the completion of the student’s stay. SAIL Rules • Students report to SAIL at the beginning of the day or when assigned. • Students must bring all necessary texts and materials. • Students will remain seated in assigned seats and work on assignments, behavioral/learning packets, or read appropriate materials. • Talking or interfacing with other students, (other than during instructor directed SAIL activity), sleeping, lounging, and eating or drinking at any time other than lunch is not allowed. • All school rules apply in SAIL, including dress code. • Students will eat lunch in the SAIL room.

  15. Students will be escorted to the lavs at two pre-designated times. • Participation in or attendance at any extracurricular activity from the time the SAIL is assigned until the next school day after completion may not be permitted. • All class work and behavioral/learning packets must be satisfactorily completed and reviewed by the SAIL instructor prior to release from the SAIL program.
