BTW • What IS a virtual field trip? -looking at pictures? -viewing something live? -viewing the results of a past event? -interacting with a site? -videoconferencing?
An Early Example: • How about the Itidarod? Although some things are available to paid “insiders”, there are some things available to everyone, some available with free registration. http://www.iditarod.com/
How have VFT’s changed? • There’s more available than ever for free. The more interactive ones (videoconferencing) are the ones that often have a cost attached.
Megasites for VFT • My favorite: http://gaillovely.com/VirtualFieldTrips.htm because it breaks things down into neat categories.
Finding the right VFT • It could be as simple as searching for ‘Inca +virtual field trip’ I’ve discovered that there are virtual field trips for virtually everything!
Virtual Field Trips Can Be Big $$$ • Prime example: http://www.campustours.com/
Complement Your Curriculum • Example: A class reading the book Dave at Night by Gail Carson Levine used this VFT to a tenement. http://www.tenement.org/index_virtual.html Author Visits (one of these was today!) http://www.bsu.edu/myvisit/ Google LitTrips http://www.googlelittrips.org/
Add to the fun… • A SMART board or Promethean board can add to the effect. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/pyramid/explore/khufudesclo.html
What do students like? • When faced with many choices and opportunities, this is what my students like: http://www.panoramas.dk/fullscreen2/full22.html And http://maps.google.com/maps
