Activities/1 • Important activity report / Region 10 Chapter Beijing (Pr Zehn An Liu, Acc. of Science) • Creationisunderway • Pr Liu planned to participate to POCO held in Beijing one weekago. 2. Project Update : “For Membership Roster(s)” • With Albe’s help we have specified the needs and methods to progress in compliance with legal and IEEE rules, with the IEEE Central concerned services (our March 2011 report) • Now in standby, we need to coordinate with AdCOM Membership Committee, need for a chair to be nominated for contact and instruction of the project • Uwe Bratzler, member of TNC, is still volunteering to membership recruitment

Subject brought in TNC by Teleconf and mail exchanges since March TNC wished to evaluate interest among its worlwide members in • region 8 (the “Nuclear Europe” and Russia, Ukraine, ME, Africa (S. Africa)..) • region 9 (Brazil, Argentina..) • region 10 (Australia, China, India, Japan, S. Korea..)..) R8 / France - Germany, in substance Our members ChristophIlgner, Rossendorf , Dresden Germany and Jean-Luc Leray, CEA Headquarters, Saclay France, are quite supportive ChristophIlgner: « You know that I am with Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (www.hzdr.de) which is also doing research in the field of nuclear safety. In my institute there is a group active in transmutation research. “Yesterday I had a discussion with the head of that group and also with the director of my institute (which is the institute of radiation physics within Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf). “I have suggested that one or two slides will be shown at the AdCom meeting about the institute so that the committee gets an idea about who is around in the field. “I am not entitled to officially express an interest in a collaboration, for this we would need to get the approval of the board of directors first. “So, your report about the Transnational Committee activities may be a good place for the slide(s) to appear, more in the sense of a brief institute presentation. Jean-Luc Leray: (Atomic Energy Commission, the High-Commissioner office) http://www.cea.fr/english_portal Recall – Post Fukushima - Context of stress tests of existing nuclear Reactors un Europe on behalf of the Member Countries Nuclear Safety Agencies. “With 58 power reactors installed in France and three reactor 3rd Generation in construction (EPR), Finlandand China, there might be a mutual interest that representatives of the French Atomic Commission (15000 employees) may be supportive to a potential IEEE Nuclear Group. “Insistence should be probably put in safety improvement by reinforcing instrumentation and resilience of power systems and fuel management to prevent the event of a crisis and mitigate in contingency. “CEA is the promoter of ANIMMA Conference with the Belgium Nuclear Center, and insisted that it should be published in IEEE-T-NS. “Being myself more in Radiation Effects, implied in RADECS but also a member and founder of the ANIMMA Steering Committee, I can do my best to participate and promote the NPSS initiative in the CEA’s Nuclear Energy Division (4000 employees, several research reactors, incl. one in construction) .

America, in substance (and Italy, also) • Our member Pr Gabriela Hoff, Professor Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, is quite supportive • Brazil “On the teleconference this morning, we speak about the Nuclear Group. “I contacted the CNEN (Brazilian National Commission of Nuclear Energy) asking if there are some institute that could be interested in collaborate in this group. They send me a list of 4 institutes that are dedicated to work with this subject in Brazil. I send the invitation and I am answering waiting for the answers. “+ I have had contacted the Institute of Physics and Engineering at Federal University in South of Brazil (that has a professor who works with a German Institute about Nuclear Reactors). He answer that he is interested in collaborate and send me his contacts: Bardo Bodmann “+ I got more one indication from region 9 who would like to collaborate with the Nuclear Group. He is a professor at a Federal University in North of Brazil that works with Nuclear Reactors in an international collaboration with Germany: Carlos Brayner . 2. Italy (incidentally) “As I am at INFN (Istituto Nazionale the Fisica Nucleare , in Italy) and they have a researcher of reference here (at least in Italy) I contacted him (I hope it is not a problem, because is out of my original working area) to see if he was interested in contribute for this group. He accepted after I talk about the general information I got from the teleconference. So I am sending his contacts (Paolo Saracco, he have been worked with reactor physics and properties of the transport of the radiation) .
R10 / Australia, in substance • Our member Pr Anatoly Rozenfeld, Univ of Wollongong, Sidney is quite supportive • “Just to say again it was good catch up on TNC activities on a phone “. • I am working on Nuclear Group and particular Nuclear Safety particular. We have in Australia quite large group involved in that at ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization) , in terms of dosimetry . My Centre for Medical Radiation Physics is also involved. • I will approach on Monday couple key people in a field and will provide with names but mean time I would like to suggest similar to suggestion of Christopher to include in 1-2 slides information about • ANSTO http://www.ansto.gov.au/ as an organization where things happened . I will send you 2 slides. However , I need discuss with ANSTO Executives regarding official collaboration within Nuclear Group that I think will be not a problem . • Best regards, • Anatoly • Recall - Australia currently has no nuclear facilities generating electricity, however, Australia has 23% of the world's uranium deposits and is the world's second largest producer of uranium after Canada. ANSTO's Open Pool Australian Lightwater (OPAL) reactor is a state-of-the-art 20 Megawatt reactor that uses low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel to achieve a range of research, scientific, industrial and production goals. • Opened by the Prime Minister in 2007, OPAL is one of a small number of reactors with the capacity for the commercial production of radioisotopes. • The suite of neutron beam instruments housed next to the reactor building and operated by the Bragg Institute represent a significant addition to ANSTO's research capabilities .
