  1. What is the post-operative care after bariatric surgery

  2. The advent of laparoscopic surgery has significantly decreased the morbidity of bariatric surgery. 1 What is the post-operative care after bariatric surgery Jun 30, 2018 The advent of laparoscopic surgery has significantly decreased the morbidity of bariatric surgery. Patients can walk and go to the washroom within a few hours of surgery. most patients get discharged from the hospital within the first 24 to 48 hours. The post-operative care after bariatric surgery includes the following:

  3. Rest is advised for the first week after surgery. This means that the patients must avoid strenuous activities. Light activity and movement in and around the house is fine. Most patients can resume work after a week of surgery. Movement is very important after bariatric surgery as it decreases the chances of venous thrombo-embolism. Pain levels post-surgery may vary from patient to patient after surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication for the first week after surgery. With each passing day the pain levels will decrease and you will feel more and more comfortable. Most patients are pain free within 7 to 14 days after surgery. However, if there is excessive pain in the abdomen, please inform the doctor as it could be a sign of something more ominous. Some degree of nausea and vomiting is expected after the surgery. This varies from individual to individual. Nausea is usually self-limiting and improves over time. The speed and quantity of food intake is also very important. All bariatric surgeries lead to a reduction in stomach size. If you eat food very fast or consume large portion sizes, then vomiting may occur. One must take small portion sizes, eat very slowly and chew the food properly. In case the vomiting is persistent then it is advisable to see the doctor.

  4. ou will be on liquids for the first 15 days after the surgery. dietary guidelines will be provided by the dietician on the team. Day 15 to 30 you will be on semi-solid diet. Post that you can consume normal home cooked food albeit in much lesser quantities. If you have severe pain in abdomen, persistent vomiting, persistent shoulder pain, fever or distension of abdomen, please get in touch with the doctor and the hospital immediately. It is mandatory to take nutritional supplements after bariatric surgery. The duration will vary depending on the type of surgery. Non-compliance with supplementation can lead to nutritional deficiencies. It is extremely important to take protein supplements post bariatric surgery. Food intake decreases considerably after bariatric surgery and hence it is important to supplement adequate amount of protein in the diet. Lack of protein intake can lead to deficiency and add to issues like hair fall, muscle wasting etc.

  5. Hence it is important to look at the larger picture. Not getting Bariatric Surgery in Mumbaidone is certainly costlier than getting it done. The price of obesity that patients pay is not only financial but also emotional. We also need to look at the broader picture about loss of productive work and cost to the state and the country.Till insurance companies start covering bariatric surgery, non-affording patients must give a serious thoughtto EMI options and not delay their treatment. Like any other chronic disease, obesity is also a progressive disease leading to irreversible changes in the body.

  6. Rigorous exercise and lifting heavy weights are to be avoided for the first 3 months after surgery. This may lead to the formation of a hernia from the laparoscopic incision sites. Walking can be started after one month of surgery. It is advisable to start with 15 minutes of light walking initially and gradually increase it to about half an hour. You can start exercising after 3 months of surgery. It is important to put in at least 45 minutes of daily exercise as that helps in toning as well as long-term weight maintenance. Weight lifting is advised only after 6 months of surgery. Regular follow up is very important after bariatric surgery. In the first year, you need to get your tests done after 3 months, 6 months and one year. In the second year, tests will be conducted twice and thereafter once every year. These tests will help us to track your nutritional status and if any deficiencies are developing then they can be tackled early on. You will also need to follow up with the team physician/endocrinologist for your medical issues. Your medicines for diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, gout etc will gradually decrease but this needs to be done under proper medical supervision.

  7. Bariatric surgery requires lifelong follow up and best results are achieved when both, patient and the team are committed towards this.
