Compromise of 1850 • A. 49ers made Cali ready to become a free state. • B. Utah and NM about ready • C. South mad that fugitive slaves were not being returned.(and nervous that states would vote against slavery)
Compromise • California in as free • PS used in NM and Utah • New strict national fugitive slave laws • Slave trading but not slavery banned in DC • --next thing is a cause! • --FSA: private citizens required to aid in the apprehension of runaway slaves • How might this make northerners feel?

Fugitive slave act and personal liberty • FSA forced northerners to become “involved” in slavery • They also didn’t like the federal government forcing them to be involved • Personal liberty laws were passed. Nullified FSA and allowed states to arrest slave returners for kidnapping. • Southerners lose their part of the compromise
Underground RR • Not a RR—Not underground • “conductors” ran it (stations were houses, lines were trails etc) • Harriet Tubman a conductor • It was a system of “paths” to free states
Uncle Tom’s Cabin • Tom a Sympathetic Character. • Made slaves seem like“real” people. • Opened the eyes of many to the evils of slavery • *Has turned into a slur because Tom was subservient even though his master was mean so it means you aren't standing up for yourself (like Sam Jack in Jango)

Bleeding Kansas • Called Bleeding due to the blood shed • Border ruffians would try to sway votes with intimidation and violence • People would move to Kansas Just to vote • Abolitionist John Brown, With his sons and friends executed 5 pro-slavery settlers • Both sides arm for battle • Similar to Lexington and Concord

Republicans in • *Fillmore, the last Whig pres, angered the South with his support of Cali’s entry as a free state • *Northerners, angered at his support of the Fugitive slave act and Pop Sov left the Whigs in great numbers, • *Opposition to slavery was the new Republican party platform • *Fremont runs on this Rep platform in 56 and loses • So……what does this say about the slavery issue?
Dred Scott/Taney • *Scott was a slave who’s owner had brought him to a free state • *He sued for his freedom • The case went to the Supreme court • *Chief Justice Taney ruled against scott • *Slaves were property not citizens so they had no right to sue • *No African could be a citizen • *Congress could not ban slavery because doing so would take away property” without due process • *This decision was very polarizing
Lincoln –Douglas debate • For a senate seat • Douglas: Backed Pop Sov. So states could have slaves if that is what people wanted • Lincoln: “eternal struggle between right and wrong” . Called slavery wrong • Douglas won the Senate seat
Harpers Ferry *John Brown believed he was an angel of God avenging the evil of slavery *He believed that violence was the best way to achieve this goal . *Seized the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in order to have arms to start a revolution *No one joined him (including blacks) *He was captured and executed by federal troops *This “turned up the heat” on the slavery debate and the ways and means to eliminate or keep it
