The Changing Earth • The Core • Inner Core- Solid Iron and Nickel • Outer Core-Molten Metal • The Mantle- 1,800 miles thick
Internal Forces that shape landforms • Pressure inside the earth causes the crust to fold, lift, bend, break, or even explode • Volcanism – magma(melted rock)flows through and out of the earth's crust • Fault- break in the Earth’s crust
Plate Tectonic Theory • Plate Tectonics: • Crust is made of many pieces, or plates • Lithosphere (crust and upper mantle) slowly slides over hot layer of Mantle • Along these boundaries we get earthquakes and volcanoes • Continental Drift Theory • Pangea – Supercontinent that began to break up 180 million years ago
Seafloor Spreading • Scientists use sonar to map the ocean floor • Looked at Mid-Oceanic Ridge, the underwater mountain range that extends around the world • Found younger rocks nearest the Rift Valley, the split in the mountains. Magma had been pushed up through the rift from the Mantle.
Plate Boundaries • Several things can happen where plates meet • Mountains • Valleys • Volcanoes • “The Ring of Fire”
