Our Changing Earth Mr Greathouse Ch 3.1
Movement of Rocks Builds Mountains • Mountains • An area of land that rises steeply compared to the area around it (Everest, Lemmon) • Mountain Range • Long lines of mountains formed at the same time and by the same process • Rockies, Catalinas, Himalayas
Mountains Mountain Mountains Range
Mountain Belts • Mountain Belts: Mountain ranges that are close together
Mountains Wear Down • Erosion: the process of wearing something down, usually by wind or water • New mountains are tall and steep, while old mountains are rounded and shorter • Land becomes flat as mountains wear down and valleys fill with their sediment
Folded Mountains • Folded Mountains: As continental crust is stressed and bends upwards • They can form from subduction or from continental-continental convergence • What is different between the 2?
Fault Block Mountains • Fault Block Mountains: form from blocks of rock that move up or cown along NORMAL faults • These cause earthquakes • Blocks that move upward form mountains, blocks that move down form valleys
Review Your Notes • Write questions in the margin to the left. You should be able to answer the questions from the information on the right.

White Boards • What is erosion? • A) The process of building a mountain • B) The process of wearing down a mountain • C) The process of an earthquake
White Boards • Where do mountain belts form? • A) Along come fault lines • B) Randomly throughout the world • C) Around the equator, or Earth’s belt
Last one… • What happens at folded mountains along oceanic-continental faults that doesn’t happen at continental-continental faults • A) Erosion • B) Faults • C) Volcanoes
