SUPERSTORMSANDY Atlantic City, New Jersey, October 2012 Presented by Chris Roselli 2013 ACM JIF Retreat
What HAPPENED? • OCTOBER 26, CAPE MAY COUNTY BARRIER ISLAND RESIDENTS URGED TO EVACUATE. • OCTOBER 27, ATLANTIC CITY CASINOS CLOSED. • OCTOBER 28, 6AM - TOLLS SUSPENDED NORTHBOUND ON GSP AND WESTBOUND ON THE AC EXPRESSWAY. • OCTOBER 28, PRESIDENT OBAMA SIGNS AN EMERGENCY DECLARATION ALLOWING NEW JERSEY TO REQUEST FEDERAL FUNDING EVEN BEFORE LANDFALL . • OCTOBER 29, LANDFALL NEAR BRIGANTINE, NJ Ocean County, New Jersey, October 2012.
UNITED STATES • APPROXIMATE DAMAGES SUSTAINED ARE ESTIMATED AT $68 BILLION. THIS IS THE SECOND COSTLIEST HURRICANE IN UNITED STATES HISTORY. SECOND ONLY TO HURRICANE KATRINA AT $145 BILLION. • UNITED STATES DEATH TOLL WAS 117 ACCORDING TO THE CDC.
New jersey • DAMAGES ESTIMATED AT $36.8 BILLION ACROSS THE STATE. • NEW JERSEY DEATH TOLL WAS 37. • 2,000,000 HOUSEHOLDS LOST POWER IN THE STORM. • 346,000 WERE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED • RELATIVELY LITTLE WIND DAMAGE. MOSTLY FLOOD DAMAGE.
ATLANTIC & CAPE MAY COUNTY • SHORTLY BEFORE THE STORM HIT, IT WAS FORECAST TO PROCEED INTO DELAWARE BAY, WHICH WOULD HAVE DEVASTATED ATLANTIC AND CAPE MAY COUNTIES. • THE STORM VEERED TO THE NORTH SPARING ATLANTIC AND CAPE MAY COUNTIES FROM THE WORST EFFECTS OF THE STORM.
Atlantic county municipal jif • DAMAGE ESTIMATES ARE APPROXIMATELY $2,182,392.00. THIS INCLUDES DAMAGES OF $350,037.00 IN DAMAGES FROM DRIVEN IN VEHICLES. • THIS AMOUNT OF $2,182,392 IS GREATER THAN THE NORMAL CATASTROPHE CLAIM THAT WE GET ON AVERAGE ACROSS ALL OF MELJIF.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM SANDY? • IT IS VITAL FOR THE MEMBER TO HAVE A POINT PERSON WHO CAN GATHER ALL OF THE DAMAGE INFORMATION FOR SUBMISSION TO THE JIF, THE EXCESS CARRIER OR TO FEMA. • THIS PERSON WOULD ALSO SEE THE REMEDIATION AND REPAIRS THROUGH TO CONCLUSION. • IT CAN BE A VERY LARGE JOB. ONE MONMOUTH JIF MEMBER SUBMITTED 19,000 PAGES OF DOCUMENTS CAPE MAY, NJ OCTOBER, 2013
LESSONS LEARNED FROM SANDY • FEMA PAYING 90% OF MEMBER CLAIMS NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE • FEMA PAYING FOR 30 DAYS OF DEBRIS REMOVAL. THE MEMBER GETS TO PICK THE 30 DAY RUN THAT BENEFITS THEM BEST. • WE STRONGLY URGE MEMBERS NOT TO SECURE THE SERVICES OF A PUBLIC ADJUSTER OR LAW FIRM CLAIMING TO BE ABLE TO SECURE MORE MONEY THAN THEY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THROUGH JIF INSURANCE AND FEMA. • THERE ARE MANY ARGUMENTS AGAINST THAT, BUT THE MOST GLARING IS THE FACT THAT THESE FIRMS ARE TAKING NO LESS THAN 10% OF THE ENTIRE CLAIM FOR THE ENTITY. IN NO CASES THAT I KNOW OF NOW, ARE THEY SECURING ANY EXTRA MONEY FOR THE ENTITY, AND CERTAINLY NOT AN EXTRA 10% OF THE ENTIRE CLAIM. • THE ENTITY’S EMPLOYEES ARE STILL DOING ALL OF THE LEGWORK. • ANYTHING NOT BEING COVERED BY INSURANCE, IS BEING COVERED BY FEMA AT 90%
LESSONS LEARNED FROM SANDY. • CONTACT FEMA, FEMA.GOV, OR (800) 621-3362, OR BY SMARTPHONE AT M.FEMA.GOV • WHY? • ASSISTANCE – FEMA WILL PAY WHAT INSURANCE WON’T, GENERALLY SPEAKING • MITIGATION – FEMA WILL PAY AN AMOUNT UP TO THE DAMAGE AMOUNT FROM THE CLAIM TO GO TOWARDS PREVENTING THE CLAIM FROM HAPPENING AGAIN
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT • DO YOU HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE? • PLEASE VISIT READY.GOV/BUSINESS • READY.GOV/HURRICANES • FLOOD POLICY REQUIRED FOR ANY OF YOUR BUILDINGS? • REGULAR MAINTENANCE CAN PREVENT LARGE EXPOSURES(DEAD TREES, EXTERIOR BUILDING MAINTENANCE SUCH AS ROOFS AND TRIM). • SHOULD YOU BOARD UP WINDOWS? • WHAT IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS ARE YOU STORING? ARE THEY STORED PROPERLY? CAN THEY BE RAISED TO A HIGHER LEVEL. CAN THEY BE SCANNED? • HOW ABOUT YOUR COMPUTERS/COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS? • WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT THEM? • LIGHTNING PROTECTION IN PLACE? • BACK THEM UP AND TAKE INFO HOME • DOES YOUR GENERATOR HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO RUN THE PORTIONS OF THE BUILDING YOU WILL NEED IT TO RUN? • IS IT RUNNING PROPERLY? REGULAR MAINTENANCE? • REMEMBER, HURRICANES ARE KNOWN FOR WEEKS. NOR’EASTERS DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF WARNING!
YOU WILL NOT HAVE A PROBLEM IF YOU DO WHAT YOU NEED TO GET BACK IN THE BUILDING • THIS INCLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO: • CONTACT A REMEDIATION COMPANY • ALL RISK: 877-247-5252 • RAPID RECOVERY: 866-505-5600 • SERVPRO: 877-887-5314 • RENT OFFICE TRAILER(S) • WILLIAMS SCOTSMAN: 800-782-1500 • BOARD UP WINDOWS • LOCAL CONTRACTORS • REMEDIATION COMPANIES ABOVE WILL ALSO DO THIS
LESSONS LEARNED FROM SANDY. • TAKE PHOTOS OF ANYTHING ABOUT TO BE REPAIRED/DISCARDED • PLEASE REMEMBER: • KEEP ALL RECEIPTS AND RENTAL AGREEMENTS • SPOLIATION
