BACKGROUND TO GOURITZ CATCHMENT • Situated along the south coast and inland Karoo regions of the Western Cape with a surface area ± 53 000 km2 • Comprises largely dry inland Great Karoo + Little Karoo with humid coastal belt • Primary drainage regions J, K1-7, H8-9: 130 quaternary catchments • 41% of runoff from the Gouritz River, 46% from the coastal sub-area, 13% from western area

WMA Primary activities • Afforestation – primarily Coastal Belt (Plettenberg Bay/Knysna area) • Agricultural • - Grapes and apples (Langkloof) • - Ostrich farming (Oudtshoorn) • - Stock farming (Karoo) • - Dairy farming (Coastal) • - Vegetables (Coastal) • Eco-tourism – primarily Coastal Belt, but also locally in Karoo and Little Karoo
Water sources in WMA • Surface water ( incl dams) • Groundwater - Groundwater NB in dry inland areas – used for domestic supply + stock watering, and irrigation (Gamka, Groot and Olifants areas) - Over-exploitation in some areas
Extent of GRDS The GRDS excludes : • majority of the coastal catchment areas covered by the Outeniqua Reserve Determination Study (ORDS) • other previous Reserve studies • only covers the Groot, Gamka, Olifants and Gouritz catchment areas.
