  1. Compare and Contrast Thesis Statements Good, Better, Best

  2. Good: Vague, but easy to stay on topic. • There are many similarities as well as differences between the twins, Leah and Adah, in Barbara Kingsolver’s novel The Poisonwood Bible. • The theme of death and rebirth is evident in both The Poisonwood Bible and The Kite Runner, but how the theme is manifested is drastically different.

  3. Better: More specific on how what you are comparing and contrasting is evident. Be careful not to get off topic. • While Leah and Adah both struggle with their faith, with their father-daughter relationship and with finding themselves in a seemingly volatile environment, such as the Congo, the paths that they take on their road to self discovery are vastly different.

  4. Best: Specific thesis with an assertion (what your thesis conveys about the text). Remember to also incorporate your assertion in your body paragraphs. • While Leah and Adah both struggle with their faith, with their father-daughter relationship and with finding themselves in a seemingly volatile environment, such as the Congo, the paths that they take on their road to self discovery are vastly different, each one helping to convey the theme of death and rebirth throughout The Poisonwood Bible.

  5. Venn Diagram: Not for a grade but may help you organize your thoughts
