What does TCP/IP stand for and what does it do? • TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol, it is for communicating between computers on the internet. • TCP/IP defines how electronic devices connect to the internet and how data should be transmitted through the internet between them.

  3. What does IP address stand for and what is it? • An IP address stands for Internet Protocol • An IP address is a binary code that every computer gets when it goes on the internet. • There are 4.3 billion possible combinations for IP address

  4. What is an ISP? • ISP is short for Internet Service Provider • There are different types of Internet Service Providers like: • Verizon: DSL/Fiber Optics • Hughestnet: Satellite • Road Runner: Cable

  5. What does DNS stand for and what is it? • DNS stands for Domain Name System(Service, Server) • DNS is a system that translates domain names into IP addresses for the computer to understand, where we understand domain names.

What does URL stand for and what is it? • URL stands for Uniform Research Locater • A URL is an address, it can take you to your destination on the web. • A URL is made up of two things: • A Protocol Identifier: http://www.example.com/, http is your protocol identifier. • Resource Name: http://www.example2.com/, example2.com is the resource name.

Search engines find all documents the have the keyword that you type in. • A search engine is like Google, it takes the word that you type in a finds all websites with that keyword. • Search engines don’t need the internet to search through your computer for your specific document. What is a search engine?

What is a cookie? • Cookies are small files that websites put onto your computers hard disk drive when you first visit a site. • Not all cookies are alright for your computer and may contain personal information. • Cookies are meant to notify the site of your return, track which pages you like so they can give you less of what you don’t care about and more of what you like.

  9. People who have internet access at home In Canada: • There are 26, 960, 000 internet users as of March, 2011. In the USA: • More then 80% of Americans have a computer in their homes but only 92% of them have access to the internet. In the World: • As of July 2010, 5 billion people use the internet, either from their phones or computers.

  10. Who invented/created the internet and for what purpose? More then one person helped create the internet that we know and love today, in the chart below is the peoples names, what part they were part of either the idea or the initial creation, what they did to help contribute to inventing the internet and the dates they did so. The internet was created for the U.S. Department of Defense, so their researchers could share information with other researchers. Most of the people to use the internet were; Scientists and academics.
