Welcome to 6th Grade SCIENCE! Ms. Bridgeland
Expectations: Must Do • Please be seated by the second bell with your notebook out and a pencil or pen in hand. • Please listen while I am talking, as well as when your classmates are talking or asking questions. • Please raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking in class. • Please remain in your seats unless I instruct you otherwise. • Please complete homework assignments on time and put your name, grade, and classon homework assignments. • Please respect the “High 5” rule.
“High-Five” Rule • Because of the amount of small group work, experiments, and projects that we will complete in class, it is important that I have a way of getting your attention quickly. • What are reasons why it is important for me to have a sign with you that helps get your attention quickly? • I will hold five fingers up and call out “5-4-3-2-1,” putting each of the fingers down until I reach “1.” When I reach “1,” the whole class should be silent so that I can give further directions, or I can remind you to quiet down so we can continue with our fun activities.
Sitting where you want to is a PRIVILEGE • If you show good behavior, listen while I’m talking and when your classmates are participating in class, then you earn the right to sit where you want. • For now you will have assigned seating when we are in the Science Lab, because then it is especially important that we follow directions and keep our voices down.
Consequences: • Strike 1: Warning • Strike 2: You talk to me briefly after class and we set up a one-on-one meeting to talk about your behavior. • Strike 3: I email your parents/talk with Mr. Hennessy.
Textbooks • You are NOT required to bring your textbook to every class. • You may keep your textbooks in your lockers unless I specifically tell you to bring them to class. • When I assign homework readings or questions from the textbook, you are allowed to take your textbooks home.
Faculty Webpage • To find my faculty webpage, which lists topics discussed in class and homework assignments, here are some instructions: • Go to www.htsdc.org • Hover over “Academics” with the mouse on the navy blue tool bar until a list drops down below it. • Click on “Faculty Webpages.” • Click on “Bridgeland.” • You should have arrived at my webpage.
Communication • cbridgeland@htsdc.org • Feel free to email me at any time with any questions. Encourage your parents to do the same! I will email back as soon as I can. • If you Communicate with me, I guarantee that you can and will be successful in this class!
Information about the Science Lab • Just a reminder that you will have Science 4 times per week instead of 5. The reason for this is that you have a double period once per week. This double period is most often used for doing experiments, small group work, and crafts, which tend to make the volume in the classroom louder. • Reminder: It is especially important to be on your best behavior and aware of the “High 5” rule when we are in the Science Lab. (Room 203) • We will also have a “Lab Safety Day” where we look at the equipment that we will be using during Science labs and make sure that we are behaving in ways that we will be safe in the Science Lab.
End of Year Awards • Every class including mine has awards given at the end of the year: • One for “Highest Achievement,” given to the student(s) with the highest grade point average in the class. • One called the “Teacher’s Award,” given to the student(s) to reward positive attitudes, work ethic, and improvement during the year. • I hope this will motivate you to set goals for this year!

10) Ms. Bridgeland was in an “a cappella” singing group in college.
Create Your Own “Getting to Know You” quiz! • Remember to write your name, grade, and class at the top of your paper. • Write 10 statements about yourself. (Make some true and some false.) Try to choose statements that your classmates might not know about you. • Remember to circle “T” or “F” to show me whether the statement is True or False. • I will collect these and each person will have the opportunity to present their quiz to the class so that everyone in the class can guess which answers are true about that person.
Did You Know? Bingo • This will be an activity to practice the “High Five” rule and to get to know interesting facts about our classmates. • Get up and walk around the classroom, and try to find a classmate who has accomplished something in each of the boxes. Have that classmate sign his or her name to fill in the blank if he or she can complete the statement. When you have five boxes in a row, (whether across, down, or diagonally, hold two fingers up,) and I will use the “High Five” rule to help you silently return to your seats so that we can hear the bingo results.
Student Survey • Please write your name, grade, and class at the top of the sheet. • Answer all questions and then I will collect these at the end of the class. • The purpose of this is to: • get to know you as a learner. • see what your interests are so I can try to incorporate those into the classroom in some way. • Get to know what you like and dislike so that I can know what I need to do to make you happy and successful in this class
