  2. Next Three Weeks • This week, we will finish our last writing assessment task on Advertisements. It will be due Friday 17th of June. • Next week, we will be completing a speaking assessment task on Tuesday & Wednesday. Two people will discuss a topic for 4 minutes between them. • The week after, we will complete our last Text Response on Tuesday the 21st of June.

  3. Today’s Lesson • Different Advertising Styles • How do companies advertise? • Introduction to Assessment Task. • Start Assessment Task

  4. Straight Sell/Factual Message • The simplest form of advertising is the straight sell. • It only shows or simply describes the product. • This normally works well for products which are familiar (熟悉/익숙한) to their audience

  5. Scientific/Technical Advertising • Scientific or Technical advertising uses scientists, information or pictures to sell the message. • Pictures of Scientists, or things that look complex makes the product look important.

  6. Demonstration • A demonstration shows the buyer what the product can do. • It is very common in cleaning products. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlqGUoQIBbA

  7. Comparison • This is where two products are compared and one is said to be better than the other. • Surveys are graphs are often used here.

  8. Animation • Animation is normally used to advertise things to children. • It is normally bright, exciting and gets your attention easily.

  9. Personality Endorsement • A Personality Symbol occurs when a famous person endorses (贊同/추천) a product. • This is very common with sports people and movie stars.

  10. Humor • Humor can be used to get a point across. • If a person remembers the advertisement, then it has been successful.

  11. Social Advertisement • This is an advertisement that tells the community information that it should know. • It might be about smoking, Sexually Transmitted Diseases or workplace safety.

  12. Suggestive • Some advertisements will suggest that you get something if you use their product. • The picture to the right is for a male deodorant.

  13. Fantasy • Many types of advertisements will suggest that your life will be better with their product. • Notice how many advertisements have beautiful people that look happy, successful and rich.

  14. How Companies Advertise • Different companies advertise by putting a tender (招標/부드러운) out to advertising companies. • These advertising companies then have to make up an advertisement that will sell the product according to the needs of the client. • Advertising can make or break a company.

  15. Assessment Task • You work for Mathias Advertising – Kaohsiung’s Number 1 Advertising Firm. • Your job is to choose a product that a company will want to sell. • You will need to make an advertisement – it may be a drawing, cartoon, radio spot, tv advertisement or billboard (poster).

  16. Assessment Task Continued • Once you have made your assessment task, you will need to explain the following: • What are you advertising • Who is your audience • What type of advertising are you using and why • How will your type of advertisement help sell the product • Due Friday 19thof June 2011
