Researcher: Dr. Amy Hudson Educator: Dr. Ann McDonald CREST Program at CUW • CREST Students • 2011 Group modeled Herpes viral peptide complexed to HLA-A2 • Demonstrating Class I MHC presentation • Learned viral evasion of class I MHC presentation and how it is investigated • Paid summer stipend for student to gain research experience in Dr. Hudson’s lab. • Student is now working in a research lab and is applying to graduate school • 2012 Group modeled HCMV US2 complexed to HLA-A2 presenting viral peptide. • Demonstrating protein interactions between HLA-A2 and US2, a viral protein that • subverts class I MHC presentation • Learned viral evasion of class I MHC presentation and how it is investigated • Students developing poster for presentation at ASMCUE in June • Two of the students plan on working to develop story for cellular landscape of class I MHC presentation and herpes viral evasion
CREST Educator: Ann H. McDonald CREST students take 1 semester ‘Project Modeling’ course Biology Research Scholars Program through ASM (July, 2011 - June, 2012) Focus on developing cellular landscape Summer, 2012 Fall, 2012 CREST students will model TCR for peptide on HLA-A2 Classroom Use of Models Using JMOL modeling to teach protein structure in Immunology Designed group project using 3D models of Abs, Ig-fold HLA-A2 model used to help understand class I MHC presentation Group project on modeling proteins in immunological synapse Future Modeling/Teaching Projects Modeling Immunological Synapse on T cells – TCR, CD4/CD8, CD3, z, CD28, CD2, LFA-1 Modeling Immunological Synapse on DC – peptide-HLA-A2, B7, LFA-3, ICAM-1 Find projects for lower level classes in Microbiology
