Africa…What we know so far • Why not just take the natural resources from Africa? • Europeans then partitioned Africa based on their own needs. • This caused ethnic conflicts, civil wars, and artificial political boundaries.

Road to Independence Kenya • Kenya gained its independence from Britain in 1964 under the leadership of Joseph Kenyatta. • The governemnt of Kenyatta was not open or free • In recent years there have been political improvements in Kenya but more improvments are needed.
Road to Independence Nigeria • Nigeria gained its impendence from Britain in 1960 through peaceful independence movements. • Within months religious wars broke out between the Christian south and the Muslim north • Although Nigeria has lots of natural resources, the corrupt government has not allowed the resources to be properly developed.
Road to Independence South Africa • In 1961, South Africans voted for and gained their independence form Britain. It took years of protests, several more decades, and a change in government leaders before blacks began to have a role in government.
