Introduction to the BIBFRAME Model http://bibframe.org Summary of Kevin Ford’s presentations for CWG meeting on February 20, 2014
What is BIBFRAME? The Bibliographic Framework Initiative will re-imagine and implement a bibliographic environment for a post-MARC world.
The Bibliographic Framework Initiative must support • RDA cataloging • replace MARC http://www.loc.gov/bibframe/
Bibliographic Framework Initiative and Linked Data -Linked Data -RDF Vocabulary/Data Model -Network-based technological protocols -For the web, on the web
Relationships Links replace strings = Reduced maintenance URIs = authority Relationship to MARC MARC has provided means for data representation MARC has been a suitable communication format
RDF: Resource Description Framework : The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard, a simple metadata data model, triples (subject-predicate-object) e.g. The University of Illinois (subject) is located in (predicate) Champaign, Illinois (object).
For example 264 1 New York: Neal Schuman Publishers, 2014 Instead of writing New York, replace it with http://id.loc.gov.authorities/names/n92062246 Replace Neal Schuman Publishers with http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79007751 id.loc.gov is LC linked Data Service Authorities and Vocabularies
Core elements of the BIBFRAME model Workresource reflecting the conceptual essence of the cataloged item InstanceResource reflecting a material embodiment of a BIBFRAME work Authority Resource reflecting key authority concepts that have defined relationships to works and instances
Example: <http://example.org/work/huck-finn>a bf:Work; bf:title "The Adventures of HuckleberryFinn"; bf:classlcc<http://id.loc.gov/authorities/classification/PS1305>; bf:primaryLanguage<http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/languages/eng>; bf:authorizedAccessPoint "Twain, Mark, 1835-1910.
