About EAB: Background EAB established in 1968. Purposes (IEEE Bylaw I 304.4): "The IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) shall recommend to the Board of Directors policies on educational matters and implement programs specifically intended to serve and benefit IEEE members in educational pursuits, the engineering and scientific community, and the general public. These programs shall include the broad planning of educational activities of the IEEE, the development and delivery of continuing education products and activities, the development of guidelines for the IEEE representatives to accreditation bodies, the monitoring of accreditation activities, the coordination of pre-college programs, and the representation of the IEEE in matters regarding engineering education. The EAB shall be the IEEE interface in education-related matters with external bodies. EAB shall be responsible for administration of the annual assessment paid to the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET)." EAB must demonstrate that it is a critical and necessary part of the IEEE by enhancing and insuring its service role to TAB and RAB - we must get closer and work with these units and their subunits, as well as with other organizational units (e.g., Standards).

About EAB: Overeaching Themes Technical Excellence IEEE is known for its technical excellence. It is why IEEE has almost 400,000 global members and why other members of the public and profession are drawn to IEEE events, conferences, and publication products and services. EAB, as a service provider within the IEEE, must likewise provide quality educational products and services or refer professionals to other educational products and services that meet our standards of technical excellence through peer review. • Contd…….2
- 2 - Financially Responsible As a service provider, EAB must be responsible for its usage of IEEE resources to further the educational goals of the IEEE. EAB must help ensure that the educational products and services that we help Societies/Sections/Chapters/Standards assemble and distribute are financially viable. Profession Oriented As an IEEE unit, EAB must fulfill its mandate to serve the profession and the public Member Services As a service provider, EAB must help both TAB and RAB to better meet their members' educational needs.
About EAB: Vision and Mission VISION: To Make IEEE A Resource of Choice for Educational Products and Services. MISSION: To Achieve Our Vision We Intend to Serve the Public, the Profession and Our Members in a Technically Excellent Financially Responsible Manner Through the Following Activities. Society Outreach: To offer a quality and financially viable service to Societies/Councils In the Identification and production of valuable and timely educational products and services. Section Outreach: To identify and facilitate the educational needs of the public, the profession and the IEEE members. Public Awareness: To partner and collaborate with other enQineering entities in enhancing public understanding and awareness of the contributions of engineering and engineers to the global economy and quality of life. Activities in 2005 Redefine the scope of EAB's activities in Continuing Education. Examine a possible outreach to conferences and selected Sections. Examine opportunities in Standards education. Address specific requests.

IEEE Accreditation Activities Outside the United States Identify needs Global accreditation workshops Assist in establishing new accreditation systems Participate in ABET Substantial Equivalency Visits Provide program evaluators for international activities HOWEVER WE DO NOT HAVE "A SEAT AT THE TABLE" IN NON- US ACCREDITATION BODIES
Continuing Professional EducationHow to get involved SOCIETY EDUCATION PROGRAMS • Host and sponsor a live workshop or training session with content developed by an IEEE Society and/or their education partners • Offer IEEE CEUs Additional recommendations for each of these types of education programs. • Develop local Corporate participation. • Offer the programs to non-members.

Pre-College EducationHow to get involved EAB PRE-COLLEGE EDUCATOR AWARD • Recognizes current pre-college classroom teachers who have inspired an appreciation and understanding of mathematics, science and technology and the engineering process in students and have encouraged students to pursue technical careers. • Teachers are nominated by a Section, Chapter, or Affinity Group. • Discuss with your members if there are any local teachers that should be nominated for this award. CARRER FAIRS I CAREER DAYS I SCIENCE FAIRS • Encourage members to do outreach to local schools through these events.
Pre-College EducationHow to get involved VINNY AWARD COMPETITION • Encourage members to volunteer to be judges for the competition(Spring). • Encourage members to Mentor Student Teams both English and Spanish speaking are needed). • Locally, promote participation in future competitions. IEEE PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIP • This Pre-College scholarship is the largest single award by an organization presented at the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. • This competition moves annually and the local Section provides judges, promotion, and outreach. • Locally, promote student participation in this event.

Pre-College EducationHow to get involved TEACHER IN-SERVICE PROGRAM • Encourage member participation to develop and present technologically oriented subject matter to local pre-college educators in an in-service or professional development setting. • Ask members to share their experiences related to their pre-college outreach efforts. FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION • Organize a FIRST team in your community to be sponsored by a local corporation. • Serve as a judge at one of the regional FIRST competitions. • Become a member of a local FIRST team.
