Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Activity Summary, Cont’d… An additional $20,000 was allocated in 2013 to the Bruce D Campbell Farm Education Centreat the U of M’s Glen Lea Research Station at the National Centre for Livestock and the Environment (NCLE), for a total of $920,000 over the last decade. Similar amounts have been allocated for 2014, with a greater amount being shifted to SIP.

  4. Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Activity Summary, Cont’d… This means that since 1999, Manitoba Pork has contributed a total of almost $8.5 million to independent, third party, swine-related research and institutional development. It is estimated that Manitoba Pork’s $8.5 million has been leveraged into at least $25 million in funding for over 100swine-related research projects over the last dozen years.

  5. Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A partial list of research projects your money has funded in whole or in part: Nutrient management planning for sow operations using extant and new feed consumption models and manure analysis (MLMMI, MRAC, U of M: E Kebreab) Applying manure to defined management zones using precision farming techniques (MLMMI, MRAC, Agra-Gold Consulting & Farmer's Edge Precision Consulting)

  6. Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A partial list of research projects your money has funded in whole or in part, Cont’d… Evaluation of a modular, interior-mounted bio-filter (MLMMI, MRAC, U of M: D Mann, Q. Zhang & L. Connor) Economic assessment of the new environment regulations for the pig industry in Manitoba (MLMMI, U of M: D. Flaten, E. Salvano, C. Grant, G. Johnson, J. Mann) Forms of phosphorus in different manures and their impact on phosphorus runoff and leaching losses from manure amended soils (MLMMI, MRAC, U of M: D Flaten, D Kumaragamage)

  7. Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A partial list of research projects your money has funded in whole or in part, Cont’d… Efficiency of buffer strips in the Manitoba landscape as a best management practice (MLMMI, MRAC, ECOMatters:S Sheppard) Sow longevity (U of M: L Conner, G Johnson, M Nyachoti & B Kemp) Transportation of hogs (Prairie Swine Centre, U of M: H Gonyou, N Lewis, T Widowski, C Dewey, L Faucitano, T Crowe, R Bergeron) Regulation of farrowing by time of feeding (U of M: L Conner, M Nyachoti & M Sheridan)

  12. Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finding out about these Research Projects The results of all research projects are available through the MLMMI website, MRAC’s website (now called the Prairie Improvement Network), the U of M’s (Ag) Website and of course through links on Manitoba Pork’s Website.

  13. Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Canadian Swine Research & Development Cluster (SIP) In May of 2010, Federal Minister of Agriculture (Gerry Ritz) announced $9.6 million in federal funding under Growing Forward, for a new swine research ‘cluster’ until April of 2013. A national swine cluster board was formed, now called Swine Innovation Porc (SIP). MPC is a member.

  14. Report from the Sustainable Development and Research Committee ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Swine-Innovation-Porc (SIP) Canadian Swine Research & Development Cluster, Cont’d… 14 major swine research projects from across Canada were funded, with an additional industry allocation of $2.2 million, for a total of almost $12 million. These project have now all wound down (several of which were mentioned above) During 2012-13, the SIPboard established national research priorities, put out a call for research proposals from across Canada, and is currently entering into the final stages of signing final agreements with researchers and the Federal Government under GF II (2014 to 2018) which we anticipate will formally get underway within a few weeks. - END -
