  1. Reducing Plastics in Buildings Katherine Adams and Mark Lynn STBA-SPAB Sustainability in Traditional Buildings 11thJune 2019

  2. Reducing Plastics in Buildings • About ASBP • Plastics in context • Plastics in buildings • Activities and initiatives • Questions

  3. Who we are Not-for-profit, mission led, membership organisation Our mission... To accelerate the transformation to a healthy, low carbon built environment by championing the use of demonstrably sustainable building products

  4. Over 60 members and partners 14 Patron Members 50 Members & Partners (2016 – EU member states) • Architects • Manufacturers • Specifiers • Suppliers • Contractors • Researchers and more…

  5. What we do We organise events, participate in research projects, advocate product standards and inform policyacross our core themes: Health andwell-being Natural materials Indoor air quality Source control,VOCs, off-gassing Moisture control Product sustainability Whole life carbon Robust product standards/EPDs Decision making tools/product databases Resourceefficiency Circular economy Design for deconstruction Material re-use

  6. What’s the Problem? • We are waking up to the legacy of the industrial age: • It’s a legacy of supply and demand • Production – what materials we use and what stuff we make • Consumption – not just what we choose to consume but how we choose to consume it • Plastics are an obvious symptom and are easy to relate to, for example “single-use plastics” • In traditional buildingsplastics can directly and indirectly damage: • Building fabric • Indoor air quality and health • The environment • Aesthetics

  7. The Bigger Picture The University of Cambridge

  8. Plastic types (2016 – EU member states; 50MT) We don’t talk about “metals” in construction, we refer to steel, aluminium, zinc, copper, etc as discreet materials so why don’t we do this with plastics?

  9. Drivers

  10. Plastics use Ellen MacArthur Foundation – The New Plastics Economy

  11. Plastics in Buildings • Packaging • E.g. HDPE, XPS • Products • PS/PIR/PUR/PET – insulation • PVC – windows, doors, ducting, drainage & pipework, cables etc. • PP/PE – membranes Can and should we be eliminating all of these?

  12. Reducing Plastics in Buildings • We can reduce all plastics in buildings by: • Consuming less • Reusing more • Recycling more • Using plastics only when they are the best available technology (BAT, BATNEEC) • Learning from traditional attitudes to things

  13. Plastics and packaging Ellen MacArthur Foundation – The New Plastics Economy

  14. Plastic types by sector (2016 – EU member states) Plastics Europe – Plastics the Facts 2017

  17. Some Examples of Practice

  18. But remember, recycled plastics is a feedstock for many construction products

  19. Healthy Buildings Conference • Our 3rdHealthy Buildings Conference took place in London on 28th February with a focus on ‘Plastics in Construction; Issues, Impacts and Alternatives’. • Over 200 delegates,25 exhibitors, withkeynote speakersEmily Penn andProf Sean Smith,Edinburgh Napier.
