Who we are Not-for-profit, mission led, membership organisation Our mission... To accelerate the transformation to a healthy, low carbon built environment by championing the use of demonstrably sustainable building products

What we do We organise events, participate in research projects, advocate product standards and inform policyacross our core themes: Health andwell-being Natural materials Indoor air quality Source control,VOCs, off-gassing Moisture control Product sustainability Whole life carbon Robust product standards/EPDs Decision making tools/product databases Resourceefficiency Circular economy Design for deconstruction Material re-use
What’s the Problem? • We are waking up to the legacy of the industrial age: • It’s a legacy of supply and demand • Production – what materials we use and what stuff we make • Consumption – not just what we choose to consume but how we choose to consume it • Plastics are an obvious symptom and are easy to relate to, for example “single-use plastics” • In traditional buildingsplastics can directly and indirectly damage: • Building fabric • Indoor air quality and health • The environment • Aesthetics
The Bigger Picture The University of Cambridge
Plastic types (2016 – EU member states; 50MT) We don’t talk about “metals” in construction, we refer to steel, aluminium, zinc, copper, etc as discreet materials so why don’t we do this with plastics?
Plastics use Ellen MacArthur Foundation – The New Plastics Economy
Plastics in Buildings • Packaging • E.g. HDPE, XPS • Products • PS/PIR/PUR/PET – insulation • PVC – windows, doors, ducting, drainage & pipework, cables etc. • PP/PE – membranes Can and should we be eliminating all of these?
Reducing Plastics in Buildings • We can reduce all plastics in buildings by: • Consuming less • Reusing more • Recycling more • Using plastics only when they are the best available technology (BAT, BATNEEC) • Learning from traditional attitudes to things

But remember, recycled plastics is a feedstock for many construction products
