NAFE’06: A Proposed Campaign Strategy J Walker, O Merlin and R Panciera Dept Civil and Env Engg The University of Melbourne, Australia Second NAFE Workshop
Objectives NAFE’05 – provide high resolution data for process level understanding of: • soil moisture retrieval • downscaling • and data assimilation. NAFE’06 – provide simulated SMOS data for trial application of: • soil moisture retrieval • downscaling • and data assimilation. Second NAFE Workshop
How to meet the objectives? • Mimic a SMOS pixel (50 by 50 km2) • Provide multi-incidence L-band data for SMOS algorithm development • Provide 1 km surface soil moisture data for verification of downscaling approaches using MODIS • Provide simulated SMOS data every 2-3 days for data assimilation Second NAFE Workshop
Murrumbidgee Catchment Yanco Study Area Kyeamba Creek Adelong Creek Flux Towers Second NAFE Workshop
Proposal • Yanco area = SMOS pixel • Fly PLMR (1km) every 2-3 days over the SMOS pixel • Multi-incidence (1km) and high res (50m) PLMR flights over focus areas with range of soil moisture and vegetation cover for: • Algorithm development • PLMR verification Second NAFE Workshop
Proposed workplan • Aircraft flight lines 2. Coincident ground data collection Second NAFE Workshop
