  1. Unit 2: Misconception Alert!

  2. Latitude and Longitude • Are these lines latitude or longitude? • What directions do they measure? Latitude! North and South

  3. Latitude and Longitude • Are these lines latitude or longitude? • What directions do they measure? Longitude! East and West

  4. Line of Longitude • Where are the lines of longitude closest together? • Where are they furthest apart? • Where would traveling 7.5° take you the farthest distance across land? North and South Poles Equator Near the Equator!

  5. What is the altitude of Polaris? 42°N What does the altitude of Polaris equal? Your Latitude!

  6. Finding the Altitude of Polaris • If you were on the North Pole, what would be your latitude? Note: Polaris is known as our celestial reference point because it is located over Earth’s axis of rotation.

  7. Finding the altitude of the North Star Where do you see the north star level with the horizon? The Equator

  8. Where would Polis appear highest in the sky? 45° N

  9. Can you use Polaris to determine your latitude in the Southern Hemisphere? • Why or Why not? No! The North Star is not visible in the southern hemisphere

  10. Earth’s Layers • Describe the layers of the earth in terms of density. Least dense Most dense

  11. The Melting Point How do you know if the interior of the earth is liquid or solid? If the interior temperature of the earth falls below the melting point than the layer is solid If the interior temperature of the earth is above the melting point than the layer is liquid
