Types of GIS Data • DEM – Surface data • SHP – ESRI’s Vector data • MIF – MapInfo’s vector data • TAB – MapInfo’s vector data • DGN – Vector data • DWG – Vector data • Raster Images – Raster data
DEM Files • Generally supplied by USGS or some other government entity. • Usually 7.5min (30m grid) for continental U.S. • Coordinate system usually not provided but can be in the header • Tiled
SHP Files • One SHP file per layer or level • Level name is name of file • Does not carry symbology • Several accompanying files • PRJ - Projection System • SBN - Spatial Index • DBF - Attributes (metadata) • SHX - Shape Index file • XML - Attributes (metadata in XML format) • All have to have the same name
MIF Files • MapInfo Interchange Format • Carries coordinate system in header • Carries symbology • Level/Layer is file name • Accompanying files • MID - Carries textural data (metadata)
TAB Files • MapInfo TAB Format • TAB – The ASCII file which is the link between all other files and holds information about the type of data file. • Accompanying files • DAT - The file which stores the attribute data. This usually a dBase III DBF file • ID - Stores information linking graphic data to the database information. • MAP - Stores the graphic and geographic information • IND - Optional index files for tabular data.
DGN & DWG Files • Stores coordinate information in header • Can be changed • Can be reprojected
Raster Images • Georeferenced • Carries projection system information in header of file • Other • Cannot carry projection system • Uses world file • World file must be same name as raster file • Examples: • JPG file uses or JPGW or JGW world file • BMP file uses BMPW or BPW world file • TIFF file uses TIFFW or TFW world file
